Core Duo vs Core 2 Duo - Page 4

i hate how fast technology moves -_-.

On the UK alienware site they have changed all the processors to core 2 duos at no extra cost whatsoever, and my order is in phase 5 already so i'm pretty pissed....i emailed them to see if they could give me a free upgrade without changing my order or delaying it too much

Ordereds for the Core 2 Duo's has been set back too like spet the 19th if you ordered yesterday or something. So I'm just going to say yeah I think you're going to have too wait if they allow you to change.

Why havent they allowed the change for the Superman notebook? They are still selling it with the Core Duo chips and not the new Core 2?

Is the Core Duo a 32bit + 32bit processor? Or is it a 32bit + 64bit processor? I'm really having a hard time finding the info on it right now and it would be greatly helpful if you guys can answer that.

Also if the Duo is a 32bit + 32bit processor then how the hell can it handle Vista which is a 64bit OS?

The Core 1 Duo is 32 bit only, and the Core 2 Duo is 32 and 64 bit. As for Vista, there are two versions, a 32 bit version, and a 64 bit. I'm running the 64 bit version of Beta 2 on my desktop, w/it's A64 4400+ x2 processor. I hope to load up Vista pre-RC1 on it this weekend. When RC-1 is released, I may try to load it on my m5550. RC-1 is suppose to be the very last pre-release before the official one. .

wehre can you get beta =o i want !

Go to Microsoft's site. They have it there.

Yeah here is the site Build 5536 but it is closed now and cant be downloaded. sorry

Unfortunately Microsoft has put a limit on how much can be downloaded

oh that's OK, i'll wait for the next version, i still dont have a computer that can use it. I'm rather nub though, it cant still use basic XP programs that require internet and stuff right?
Yeah. The C2D will run 32-bit Vista, but by the time it is stable, I'll be running a 64-bit proc anyway. I'll probably be on XP for the forseeable future, That's why I'm not worried about it.

I'm pretty sure those benchmarks you posted were severly bottlenecked by that X1600. The Conroe is a completely different architecture, and definately beats the Core Duo.

The C2D only beats the CD in 3D Graphics and Video/Mp3 Encoding. Gaming there is no real difference.

If you read the review, it states, that these 3D benchmarks are bottlenecked by the GPU. The Conroe pulls a definate lead in the scores when paired with high end graphics chips.

ie."Unfortunately, the fastest Merom compatible laptop we have on hand is severely constrained in gaming performance by the X1600 GPU."

Yes...but that's partly the point. The go 7600 in the m5550, and x1800 in the m5750 will still be somewhat of a bottleneck, and there won't be large performance games except for people working with video encoding...

Well, when a review of the Core2Duo vs. Core Duo with an X1800 comes out, well find out I guess.

I think people aren't seeing the big picture with CPUs going to 64bit and finally Microsoft putting out a decent 64bit OS. The big change won't happen until the DirectX 10 video cards start coming out and Developers start writing apps and games in 64bit.

Thats when you will take advantage of the 64bit CPU, the 64bit OS, etc...

mmm, i'm not exactly sure what this 64 bit stuff means for technology. programs run better? better graphics? i dunno anything =[

For right now and for most people it will not make a difference. The only benefit would be if you wanted to address > 2GB of memory.
as djinn said, the main reason why you're not seeing performance gains from cd to c2d is that most apps and games are not written for 64bit. As c2d and athlon 64 processors become more popular, you'll start to see a lot more 64 bit apps, such as Vista.
yeah, i know, but what exactly is the difference between these 64 bit apps and the 32 bit. what does the extra 32 do?

I hope this clarifies the issue for you: http://www.softwaretipsandtricks.com...bit-processors

Think of it this way... Anyone running 64bit CPU and OS has bragging rights. But will end up finishing the same place as 32bit in most benchmarks. Now toss in some 64bit Apps that will utilize the pipeline of the 64bit CPU, it will be a clear winner.

As stated before, we won't see much performance increase until things are fully running at 64bit.
