Core 2 Duo's vs Core duo.

Thread Starter
I am buying a notebook, and I want to know how much better is core 2 duo then the regular core duo.
In terms of power consumption, it's not (it draws more power than Yonah did).

In terms of performance, anything up to 20% depending on the application (and that's only for the 4MB cache ones; the 2MB models will be a bit slower).

In terms of future-proofing, it's quite a bit better because it supports 64-bit instructions.

umm merom draws less power then yohan. atleast thats what all the reviews say.

10-20% performance increase

depending on what your going to do it might not affect you at all

And also the 64Bit if you want to upgrade to Vista in the soon future thats the only thing good about

Is Core Duo 64Bit compatible Hmm I kinda read somewhere it wasnt can someone clarify this or is it 32

EDIT: as slayte said

I was told by Ken at Gentech that Vista will ship with a 32 disk and a 64 disk.
That's true. However, one reason to go with a 64-bit CPU is that Vista has just cut HD playback on 32-bit systems. Of course, that doesn't matter for most people. But, who knows what else is different.

It's not what Intel say, and I suspect that Intel know more about their CPUs than most people.

According to Intel's documentation, Merom is 34w and Yonah is 31w (TDP).

There's an article here about it.

As above, Core Duo = 32-bit. Core 2 Duo = 64-bit.

Microsoft's decision, not intel's.

battery life for merom is slight better. the 2.33ghz merom is crazy expensive from retail you might be able to get a ES for 500
post #11 of 29
ye, the retail core2duo are quite expensive, around $400 for one with 4mb L2

I've just ordered a laptop with a 1.8ghz core duo. In the future (maybe a year or so) will I be able to replace the processor with a core2duo? I've read in many places that it is quite simple to just swap the processors.

SO if C2D is 64 bit, does that mean it won't run the current 32bit apps like Photoshop 7, etc...? Or is it backwards compatible?

Edit: Added this URL so you can see the difference betwen C2D & DC for different apps: http://www23.tomshardware.com/cpu.html

I'm pretty sure that 64bit proceesors can run both 32 and 64 bit applications.
You can run both but you won't get the same speed.
The Core 2 Duo will be fine in 32-bit applications.

All the current benchmarks (which show Merom being up to 20% ahead of Yonah) are done with 32-bit software. If you used 64-bit software for the Merom, it'd be a bit quicker again.

Merom (or the current ones, anyway) use the same platform as Yonah did. As long as the laptop manufacturer provides the appropriate BIOS update and doesn't solder the CPU to the mainboard, you can very easily upgrade from Yonah to Merom.

according to the info in this thread the core 2 duo gains in battery time(at least 15-20%).

My laptop will be a HP nc8430, does anyone have any experience of this laptop, easy to just swap the cpu's or impossible?

just a little correction: it's not the decision of MS to leave out HD functionality out of vista 32-bit, it is the decision of the content owners or something like that. 3rd party developers, like cyberlink, can provide playback solutions just like they do with dvd. Vista itself will not determine whether or not the content should play, i think it's up to those third parties to determine that.

sorry if that was a bit off-topic and a bit confusing

For performance case ofcouse Core 2 Duo will win but it comes with a price too. Consider what use to it. BTW Intel is working on Quad core CPUs, which will be release after Core 2 Duo gets popular. By the time Quad core came out for 1 month there will be price drop for Core 2 Duo.. So see if you can hold awhile.. For me i know Core 2 Duo coming soon but i decided to get Core Duo, because is simply powerful enough for my use And will serve me well for another 2-3 years max.. lol

EDIT: For power using case, you need more RAM, Core Duo T2500 will do very fine. For gaming, go for Turion X2, no dubt.
