Another MoBo Meltdown

Thread Starter
Does anyone know of a resource for replacing the motherboard on the NP9860 besides sending it to Sager? Mine has died 3 months past waranty. It seems to be happening to a lot of people. I'm not that technical, so I need help.

Sager will replace the mobo with an upgraded 9890 mobo which I believe requires a new power supply also. The upgraded mobo is capable of running the latest video cards, but it will cost you an extra $500 or so to upgrade your GPU. If you find an online vendor that sells the mobo, keep in mind that there are several revisions out there that will work. I would make sure that they sell you the latest version (6.1 AFAIK), and make sure it's new.

No, not quite true... you can still use your 9860 powerbrick but ONLY if you keep your old GPU. If you upgrade to the new GPU (7900Nvidia) with the new 9890 motherboard, then yes, you have to get a new brick.

The vital spec of the PSU is its maximum rated power output.

My Rock XTi [9890] PSU is rated for 220W - 20VDC 11A.

If the maximum output isn't high enough, it can lead to performance problems at full load and possible PSU damage/failure ... and I've been asked to look at a couple of machines in the aftermath of a PSU meltdown that wrote off the mainboard.

Better safe than replacing mainboards ... which don't go wrong that often, its just that you only get to see complaints on forums, not praise
