Dell Media Direct - AGAIN

Thread Starter
Firstly my apologies if this subject has been covered and specifically my problem. As a newbie on the board, I did try a search and looking over the forums for answers, but either they have been archived or I am just being incredibly dumb.

My problem concerns the Media Direct programme on an XPS M1710.

Before purchase my hard disk failed, and Dell's reseller replaced my HD. In a rush to ship, he left no partition for the MD function. On arrival at my house all the MD function did was to load up Dell Media Experience in Windows.

I therefore in my newbie way tried to use the MD utility but obviously as the partition didnt exist it did nothing. I then used an open source partition magic programme to resize my existing partition to allow space for MD which worked fine as did the OS after that.

Using the links on this forum, I downloaded MD 2.0 ISO and tried to install. But all that happened was the installation got to 16% and sat there back on the welcome screen of blank blue, welcome to Dell MD powered by whoever. I rebooted and tried the MD which did nothing but the OS still worked.

So i tried to fool MD and creating an x: as the empty partition extracted everything from the ISO installation process onto it. Rebooting, the Dell MD button worked fine but it had also taken over the MBR and therefore Windows didnt boot when I press power instead MD did. USing the MD repair utility fixed this problem but then lost me my MD too

So now my situation is as follows:

Have 1 x partition of 72.7gb with Windows on etc.
1 x 2.26gb unallocated
the dell media direct reinstllation cd
the dell resource cd

a media direct button which boots into the dell media experience and a power button which boots into windows fine.

iv followed all the instrctions in the PDF but no luck.

So my question is - is there a specific problem with the Dell MD install on 16% and then quitting or am I doing something obviously wrong??

Cheers and thanks to the forum for link to Dell MD

Gotta leave approx. 1500mb UNPARTITIONED. Don't bother calling dell, it's waste of time. You just have to read through few hundred pages of that direct media post.
Stopping at 16% means it doesn't have the space to install IMO.

He has 2.26gb of free space wich should be more tham enough. It could be the MD 2.0 ISO you downloaded. There are different versions of the MD 2.0 CD depending on your system type. I would call Dell and get the proper CD and then retry and see what happens.

Funny thing is when he finally gets it fixed, he prolly wouldn't even use it.

LOL, yea... I am the one who has uploaded all the MD2.0 and MDX3.1 for download and even I dont use it that often (I mainly did it for the exercise and testing purposes).
Having said that, I believe he has the 2.2GB partition incorrectly allocated.
What needs to be done is he needs to DELETE that last partition so that even the partition manager does not see it as a partition.

Then, the install will work fine and after it is done (and tested working) he can re-allocate the space using that partition manager to reclaim the extra ~750mb space he will have left over.

Before the reallocation of space, you should be sure to install all the codecs you will want in media direct as they will take up some extra space (depending on which codecs you install/ how many codecs you install).

I did simmilar when I did my last test install of MD.
I allocated 2GB of space at the end of my XP partition, deleted the 2gb partition (so it is not seen or formatted in any way) installed media direct (making sure to have the taskmgr.exe copied over when the partition MD creates is visible).. booted up into MD and ctrl-alt-del so I can install all my codecs, MB drivers, Video Drivers, and Sound Drivers off of the CD I burned.

Then when everything was tested working I booted into XP and used the partition manager to re-allocate the remaining space from the MD install (came to about 450mb).

Hope this helps... but like others said... you may not really use it.
I do like how quickly it boots up, but I find I get better battery life by running Media Experience thru XP with i8kfangui and cpu Rightmark running (on power on demand setting, undervolted on the higher multipliers) to save battery usage and keep things cool.

Hope this helps.

PS.. I have updated to the Latest version of MD2.0 that I can get from Dell (I dont believe there is a MD3.0 yet, but I do have a MD2.0 version 031xx available for download in the original thread. (just do a search for my name and media direct)
