Atheros AR5006X

So I finally broke down and bought a Atheros AR5006X for my E1705.

So far I'm pretty darn pleased, the software is quick, it connects lighting fast and my signal is great. If anyone has questions about it let me know.

I've also got a Intel 3945 for sale I guess if anyone wants to PM me with a price, since I won't be needed in as I have my AR5006X now, but if you have a Dell Wireless I'd recommend upgrading.

Glad to see you got yours up and running.
It was a breeze for me as well.
My one question is which color antennae wire did you attach to which (main/aux).
I looked at the broadcom pdf file for wireless card dell rebadges (the 1390) and saw that white matches with Main and Black with the Aux.. did you notice the same?

I do get a ~4-5db increase in signal strength with White/Main Black/Aux compared to the opposite.

Just curious

P.S. .. are there any updated drivers that you know of for this card?

I contacted Wildpackets to see if they could release some drivers for this, that would be nice....
I havn't been able to find any optimized drivers yet.
I'll test that whole white/black thing in a bit...

Thats cool, hopefully Wildpackets will be able to get something going.
Also, I was doing widows update last night and noticed there was a windows driver update for this card.
I think once I get everything the way I like it and make a ghost backup image, I may try those windows ones and see what happens (probably nothing except 'windows compatable' added)

I've recently posted about newer software/drive (newer than what I had). The Atheros client is kinda clunky but I experience signal loss in two different laptops when I let windows manage the card.

Hmm, I just found your thread and will check my driver version when I get home tonight.
So far, my auto profiles work fine (I have 2 setup for the 2 main wirless networks I connect to) and it is pretty easy to switch between the 2.

Also, could you post a link to the other tread you found with the other driver version (would like to give it a read)

Thanks!

that's what I have book marked. I don't know if it matters or not but my card is the 5006XS I think there is also just an "X" model also.

how'd those drivers compare did you have something newer?
As far as the White/Main Black/Aux goes, that is the correct order. I picked that up from the Dell tech that always comes to my house for my repairs... This just is the way Dell color codes the antenna's one these machines. Hope that helps.

TekWarren, I went floating around and none of those on that thread work for my card.

Same here... but just in case there are other updated drivers somewhere, my current drivers for the AR5006X are v:4.1.1.231

I had to do some finagaling to get my card to show up with the right model name when I used those drivers myself. But it could be that we just have different models and the drivers are not universal. I have the 5006XS while I keep seeing you guys saying 5006X (no S).

Yeah, mine has no "S"

Hi Stormlifter,

What kind of router you are using and what is the max download speed that you can achieve ?

I have a Belkin Pre-N router which I believe it is using the Atheros Chipset.

Ok.. just an update.
I went searching google and I found the Ekahau site and they offer a driver for Atheros cards which includes this one (the AR5006EX).
SO... I downloaded it and gave it a try.

It shows a driver version of 4.1.2.137 with a date of 6/20/06.
I had to recreate my network profile so I could reconnect to my router (as it added a bunch of Ekahau profiles) but everything seems to be working just as well as before.

So.. this is a updated driver compared to the previous one I was using (which if I remember correctly had a date of 5/?/05)

Also, the client utility looks EXACTLY the same except there is a ekahau emblem added with the atheros one.

If anyone want to give it a try... here is the link

Also... when I updated my driver it sat there for about 5 minutes looking like it wasn't doing anything (except my CPU load was at 50% the whole time) so if the same happens to you..... just grab a cup of coffee a beer etc.. until it finishes.

LMK what you all think!

i've read that the XS is a little better than the "X" as far as the chips go.
Yea, the XS allows you to connect at the 108MB speed, while the X goes as fast as 54MB.
I have yet to find someone selling the XS though (and we are talking about the EX and EXS for the mini express slot)

Has anyone found drivers for the ar5000x that works with wildpackets airpeak? Debaucher did those drivers work for it? Is there something better about them? have you used the atheros ones
post #19 of 24
Yea, I used the atheros ones first and now these ekahau ones.
As far as I can tell, they are both the same in signal strength and quality.
The ekahau ones add a little extra functionality... but you need to buy the extra programs that ekahau offers to utilize them (things like ekahau site servey etc...)

I personally will keep using these drivers as they work great and are kept more up to date than the 'normal' atheros drivers (I believe these are atheros drivers that have been modified/updated to work with the ekahau programs)

Anyone here running a card with the AR5006EGS chipset? I bought one from this eBay store: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...m=200030491111 and am waiting to receive it.
