E1405 vs. 640m. Which is better?

Hey ... i'm a law student and i'm upgrading my notebook from an Inspiron 700m. I've had this laptop for about a year now and i've noticed that i can upgrade to a new notebook for about $100-$200. Considering the new processors (core duo as opposed to Pentium M), the new warranty, etc., i've decided its worth it.

I just need help deciding between two notebooks. I'm deciding between getting an Inspiron E1405 or Inspiron 640m notebook. One is through home and home office (E1405) and the other is through small business (640m).

The specs on both are pretty much identical and have the standard features, including Core Duo T2050, 60G HD, DVD-RW, wireless capabilities, 14.1" ultrasharp screen, 6-cell battery, etc.

So, since the specs on both are identical, and both are inspiron, and both are the same price, which one should I buy? Any technical advice and non-technical advice (like customer reviews) would be much appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Small business is always the way to go in my opinion if price is not the factor.

The 700m is as stable as a rock. I had one of them until march. WOW!
Are you in the market for something similar in dimentions?

Sort of ... I'm actually looking forward to the increase in screen size from 12.1 to 14.1 considering the weight difference is only around 1 pound.

I just checked on ebay and most sellers are advertising this system as E1405 / 640m. Apparently, they are not making a distinction - maybe they're the same, just different model numbers to allow dell to sell one for home office and another in small business.

Well in they are similar, but small business is supposed to get better quality parts. Dunno if that's still true.
But go with small business. What's the main use or uses you will have for the laptop?

Just the basics like notetaking in class, surfing the net, watching videos / movies, burning CDs, downloading music/videos, etc. Multi-tasking capabilities is very important. Unfortunately, no gaming cause i have no time.

Buy the one that is cheaper, they are identical systems.

E1405 = 640m
E1505 = 6400
E1705 = 9400

They are the same system, just different naming conventions... By the way, are you happy with your 700m? I think since you're not into gaming & basically just use your laptop for email, internet & simple word processing, I'll suggest that you wait for just a little while longer & get a newer laptop with the Santa Rosa platform & also MS Vista in a few months time... This is just my humble opinion.

Santa Rosa platform? MS Vista? Can you please explain?

I like my 700m, but its selling for pretty high on eBay right now and with $100-200, i can get a new laptop.

Santa Rosa will be the next Intel Mobile chipset due sometime early next year, I would say march-april time frame. It will support 800mhz memory and Core 2 Dup processors that will be faster than the current Duo Core processors. Vistas will be the next OS from Microsoft set to replace Wndows XP some time early next year (January-February).
