Posted a thread back too find out any good info about getting a laptop and didnt get good help. I kept away from Dells since the whole battery thing(Yes I know Dell owns Alien), just hate Sony's computers now, Theres way too many HP owners, Compaq is just HP but didnt really look into, Gateway was pretty nice but stayed away, Voodoo is just too expensive, Sager only had desktop processors and some of the others just didnt catch my eye as much.

So I ended up with this laptop and i'm really happy with this thing

Funniest tape ever. It needed a sig but FedEx just left it out on my door :

Box inside a box

17inch widescreen with a full keyboard

I feel kind of bummed since I got one with a Core Duo and just catched it on there website that now reads Core 2 Duo. Thank god we can upgrade too the Core 2 Duo on these things so that makes me feel a bit better about it.

Thank you all.

The Build:
+ The screen is nice and glossy and very bright
+ The paint is very nice glossy and smooth. Doesnt feel cheap at all.
+ The keyboard is nice and large in size
+ Very quite. Even with the fans turned on the thing runs very silent.

- The chassis of it feels a bit Flimsy when you are holding it. I can feel a slight bend but I guess that has too do with how big the thing is.
- Some of the keys are a bit smaller then normal but what do you expect?
- Very heavy IMO. However it feels just as about heavy or just a bit more then my friends HP 15inch.

I'm going too use it for a good month too make sure there is NO dead pixels. What I hate more then anything else is getting a ****ing screen with a dead pixel. And i'm sure Alienware is same just like all the other ****ing companies that likes too tell you that its a normal thing. Well **** YOU but thats not normal IMHFO

Other then that I couldnt connect too my D-Link N router wireless so removed the intel program.........need it back agian tho so I'll reinstall it again. We'll see how this thing holds up in a month and hopefully I wont have a dead pixel (and yes I'm one of the freaks that goes threw the screen every square inch looking for that crap).

Ummmmmm My system randomly shuts down for no reason when i'm viewing videos, change the resolution of the screen, installing an application etc etc. WTF is going on here?

ok, so your system is randomly shutting down?

and you are having problems connecting to your wireless router?

I got kinda confused w/ your last post...

I'm sure the wireless router is the problem.

Also the laptop will randomly shut down out of nowhere and for no reason

sorry to hear about your problems, i will forward your thread to one of our alienware reps to help you out tommorrow...

give tech support a call and keep us posted...

I just ordered one today, so i hope you get your lappy running perfectly soon

Ummmm i have the same problem with my m5550! After hours of bickering with CS and Tech support (which are both pretty bad)they offered to take my unit back (cancel my order) and let me reconfigure another unit. If your machine is having this problem too (unit randomly turnning off plugged in) it sounds like you are having the same problem i'm experiecing. This is strange... I'm wondering if I should just cancel my order even though the new m5550 has the duo core 2 processor. Maybe I should just stick with my gateway???

If you're getting random shut offs, and you ordered respawn, it's worth a try to use the respawn disc and reload windows. For some reason I'm seeing a few posts with this issue, and a lot of them are solved by a fresh install of windows from respawn or the recovery disc.

They build and test these laptops, then before they ship they reinstall the OS to get rid of their run in software and diagnostics. It seems a few people have received their machine with the final install corrupted. I've seen several people now that reinstalled windows and the random shut offs stopped.

It also could be memory, so if you can download and run memtest.

I'll try out memtest 1st then reinstall windows with the OS CD that I've gotten. Sucks that it has too be like this

Did a full reinstall of Windows with the disc that was included with the kit, also installed all the drivers, seems to work pretty good now

Cool I hope that takes care of it... Bummer you had to do it though.

Great job HH!

Glad to see you are up n running...hmmm I never get the respawn, wonder if I should reconsider now....

oh well, I always have HH to help me, muahahahahah

Why would reinstalling windows fix the problem? (corrupt drivers etc?) Anyways I'm returning my unit and AW is sending me another unit with the duo core 2 processor... I'm wondering if should just upgrade to the m5750 model... Rei86 are u sure your laptop is not turning off anymore? I didnt buy the respawn either so i might consider it... the only thing is do I want to pay 500 extra for the m5750? I know it has a great graphics card but not sure if i want to spend the extra money especially with the random shut off issues I have encountered with my first m5550.
well depends Bryan,

I like the size of the 5550, but I want more than just a XGA screen (my current lappy has a 15.4 screen w/ XGA and it is not enough "real-estate" for me)

plus I wanted a 17 screen w/ the largest resolution...

if the 5550 was still offered w/ the wsxga+ or the wuxga, i may have gone w/ that (but probably not, since I already have a 15.4)

I dont know about you guys but my M5750 had doom 3 on there.

So i'm guessing after they got done benching it they didnt even reinstall windows and/or did but the version they did was corrupt. I still have too play with it more but so far so good.
Rei86, mine had doom 3 on it too but it wouldnt load lol. I tested bf2 and doom 3 on my ati x1400 and the games ran pretty darn good for a budget card with only 512 ram. I want the 17 inch but i feel it will be abit too large for me... my current 17 inch gateway is thinner than the m5550 and has over 3 hr battery life vs the 2 on the AW. Also how is the sound with the sub on the m5750?

Shit. If you listen too high audio all day and have a decent setup on your desktop/home then you'll think of this as shit. Sorry but it just isnt good. Turning the volume all the way up isnt recomanded IMHO. Another thing is that the 17inch is way too friggen big IMO. I thought my friends 15inch was 17 and that is the only reason why I got it. If I had too do it all over again I would've probablly gotten the 12.1inch screen or something since that would be more friendly when it comes too mobility.

Oh yeah I used there windows cd that they give you, I didnt use the respwan CD/DVD.
I might just stick with my m5550 order... i just configered a m5750 and the total was around 1678.00 shipped vs 1078 for my m5550... I dont think its worth 600 more especially if its as heavy as you say and the sound is sub par.

Keep us posted on your m5750, hopefully it will NEVER shut off randomly on you again.
