Installing Lightscribe (on a dv5000t)

Some of you may remember may, I had a thread about a week ago re: issues doing a fresh install of the OS/programs on my new PC.

Well, I got just about everything to work... just about. The one thing that had trouble installing, that I skipped over at the time, was the Lightscribe installation. For those that don't know I backed up my SWSETUP folder on 2 separate dvds (didn't have any double sided ones, though my laptop's burner is dual layer capable).

I pop in SWSETUP#1, open the Lightscribe folder, and double click on the installation program....

"UPDATE_SHELL_COMMAND property must be set on the command line".....

Then it says the installer couldn't complete the install, and I have to click finish. I tried lodging a complaint with lightscribe 1st but you need to tell them the version/brand/date on your lightscribe drive and I don't know that cuz I don't even have it installed yet.

Robbie,

In all honesty, do not waste your time with the Lightscribe software which came on your system. Even on my dv8000t, it did not want to reinstall correctly. If you are looking the latest software for your drive, go to http://www.lightscribe.com/ and download the software from there. You will need to get the driver, the enhanced contrast setting, and also get the SureThing CD Labeler 4SE software as well.

From that site, you will have everything you need to get your drive up and operational, and a utility that works better than the Sonic ExpressLabel originally installed on the system.

Enjoy.

Thanks aziza.

One more question: when burning a dvd film rip, is there a way to put the artwork from the retail DVD on your lightscribe disc? (I know it would be black-and-white, but still cool)

Yes. If you have a scanner, you can scan the disc in as an image files ie. jpg, bmp, tif. Within the SureThing CD Labeler software you can deposit that image as a background. It is best that you burn the data to the disc first before making the label. It will take less time to complete the data phase than the lightscribe. If you loaded the enhanced contrast settings, it will take 35 minutes to complete a disc with full coverage.
