Intel Pro Wireless 2100 and Sentia

I would like to know if the Intel Pro Wireless 2100 mini PCI included with the Sentia, have there been any problems such as dropped connections, poor signals, random disconnects, and audio skipping when compared to the 51m's Atheros-based mini PCI wireless? I've noticed that the Atheros-based mini PCI wireless in my Alienware 51m has those exact problems I've listed. I was wondering if the Intel Pro Wireless 2100 mini PCI has the exact problem. And, also, since the Sentia shares the same magnesium alloy chassis as the 51m, has there been any radio frequency interruptions or disconnections due to the chassis? Is the antenna arrangement the same in the Sentia as in the 51m?

Please respond quickly before I can replace my existing mini PCI wireless in my 51m. I've already replaced the shoddy Atheros-based mini PCI to a Dell TrueMobile 1300 mini PCI in my 51m. However, I still get dropped connections and poor signals. I'm already suspecting the magnesium alloy and the way the internal antenna arrangement in the 51m that's disrupting the signal. Does any Sentia users experience the same problems with their Intel Pro Wireless 2100 mini PCI?

As far as I know there is no report of the Sentia wifi working as poorly as the Aetheros card on the Area51m.

Read Booga's review (its on a sticky at the top of this forum) as I believe he goes over the wireless aspects of the Sentia.

have you tried do a power cycle on the WAP? ive had similar probelms before and a power cycle cleared it up.

WEP enabled for my 51m, same problem in both the Atheros mini PCI and the Dell TrueMobile 1300. WPA disabled, DHCP enabled on router. Read my first post and answer appropriately. I really need user opiinions. Thank you.

So far only problem is that out of the box the driver or Intel PROSet software was not compatible with WPA, Ive been hitting it for like 3 hours with stuff including laptop updates for hp otebooks and something finally worked!! I dont know what though

Intel has done an impressive job with the 2100. I would rate the signal strength of the 2100 as almost the same as PC cards that I have tested in the past. The Sentia's antenna is routed to the LCD which allows for optimal signal reception placement. The utility for wireless also controls the built in 10/100 card. Wireless options include logging, and signal strength controls which is far more advanced compared to some utilities I have seen from other vendors.

Archalien points out problems that he ran into with using WPA which seemed to suggest driver issue. WPA is relatively new and issues may not have been raised yet with alienware because of the wider use of WEP and the relatively recent release of the Sentia. Do your part Archalien and submit your observations with alienware support to get them looking into possible driver issues with WPA.

I did a little experiment...

NOTICE: ALL ALIENWARE 51m USERS
Tonight, myself and two other friends gave up with the built-in wireless and decided to do a little experiment. We opened up my 51m (took 1 hour to do so... damn snap-on and screwed cases). Afterwards we plugged only the MAIN (BLACK) wire antenna into the mini PCI card, after we removed it of course. And, we let it dangle OUTSIDE the case. I then turned on the 51m and found out I got Very Good to Excellent signal at 11 mbits/sec to 54 mbits/sec. This thus proved a theory I susptected before: the case and the chassis in the 51m interrupts the wireless signal. After a successful test of streaming a 300k music video of Evanesance, we turned it off and wired the antenna to the left side of the LCD screen. (This was the most difficult part of the experiment.) After reinstalling and rescrewing and resnapping the case back, we turned it on and found another surprise. Even with the MAIN (BLACK) antenna near the LCD monitor and the AUXILLARY (GRAY) wire plugged into the mini PCI wireless, the signal DROPPED significantly to GOOD then lower to VERY LOW then disconnected. The speeds hovered around 1 to 5 mbits/sec and never higher than 11. My friends and I then came to another conclusion: even with the wire near the LCD screen, the reception dropped. This could be caused by two possible things: one, the plastic material used to house the LCD screen and two, the silver paint could be blocking much of the wireless signals. It still disconnects at random. Be advised that doing this experiment definitely voided my 1 year warranty, but proves that Alienware has made a shoddy laptop case that is bad for wireless signals. If you'd like, for all Alienware 51m users complain alot to Alienware and pass on this message to other 51m users.

Is the XP patch part of Windows update, or was it something you downloaded manually from MS? If so, please post links to help others who may encounter the same issues with WPA.
