My M90 with a Merom T7400

This is really wierd. From what I have read the Merom is post to be much cooler then the Yonah. Will my temp for the Merom runs alot hotter and gets pretty hot under load. I never noticed this with my Yonah and it ran much cooler. So I'm not sure what the hick is up with the Merom. I'm going to order a new CPU heat sink to see if this will help. Right now the Merom is running at 52-c with the fans on. Something is really wrong with my M90 or the heatsink. If any one can help me please feel free to do so. P-S- I am using AS5.

Are you running an ES Merom? Maybe they run hotter...

lol dont know if I would be advertising that sony battery you have lol

Anywys, that's a sweet system you have there. I plan on upgrading my 1710 to the Merom & dropping my current 2.16 in my 1405.. I am interested to see if the battery life improvement these things are boasting is a real world gain or just hype

No, but I probably wouldn't be inclined to tell them I had an ES processor.

I take it you are using the latest BIOS with the Merom support?

It is a little odd - my XPS M1710 is around 45-50 degrees at idle and anything up to 90 with both cores under maximum load. I thought it was down to an immature BIOS, but maybe not if your M90 is reporting the same.

The strange thing is that the T7200 is as cool as a cucumber in my old E1705.

Your correct it's a bios issue or maybe the motherboard i'm seeing the same temps as grandmaster with my t7400 in my m1710. I just contacted Dell today and told them what i've done (changed cpu's), they weren't too concerned they replied with this email

My email said

Hi there just wanted to know when and if Dell is going to release a new Bios update for the DELL XPS M1710 so it can support the new Intel core 2 duo T7400 merom processor.

Europe and America are already selling the new XPS M1710 with the new Intel core 2 duo T7400 processor also I see you have released a bios update for the M1210 but nothing for the M1710

Currently I have upgraded my dell xps m1710 CPU from a Intel core duo T2500to the new Intel core 2 duo T7400 2.16 GHz Processor Rev ES B0 sample

Everything is working fine no problem except each time I turn the laptop on during the loading process it gives me a message saying new CPU processor not supported unknown hit F1 to continue.
Also the temps seem a little hotter than yohan chip

Thanks you

Dell's reply was
Thank you for providing all the important information. After we reconfirmed with manufacturing & different countries and region's marketing team, we did brought you some info but that's not finalized as it is still in progress. We can't promise the exact date but the marketing executive gave us some clue that the M1710 XPS with Core2Duo is going to be introduced to Australia & New Zealand in September. However the BIOS update will only be launch after the Core2Duo M1710 on sale, the update would be ready after middle of September or beginning of October.

We are glad to inform you, although the Motherboard from different region isn't the same architecture design, your M1710 is absolutely compatible with the cutting edge Core2Duo. After matching the processor stepping grade, we are certain. You may check on Dell Support website regularly for the BIOS update.
We will try our best to remind you for the update when we receive any.

To the original poster - do you have the A02 BIOS installed on your M90?

Yes I have the A02 bios. It look like Dell needs to redo the Bios again. From what I can tell it doesn't really support the Merom at the moment. My thought is that Dell just put a bios out that read the chip but Does not really support the Merom. The bios is not quit optimized yet. We should see a new bios update soon.

Well, Dell is now shipping XPS M1710s with the T7400, so I guess we'll have to wait for the BIOS update. However, if the M90 BIOS doesn't work properly, I find it unlikely that the M1710 will either.

I have an M1210 on order, so I think I'll swap out the T7400 with the T2500 from the M1210 and sell the M1710 without Core 2 Duo (even though I have two T7400s spare).
