Hey guys. Just this evening after more bs with the Area51 7500, I got fed up and cancelled the order. But since my current laptop is for shit and my current desktop computer that I built 2 years ago runs fear on almost all max settings , I decided that a laptop upgrade would be better anyway. My current comp with a new vid card and ram ( currently sportin a radeon 9800 pro 128 and 1 gb dual channel ocz ) will hold me until vista and vista video cards are released and all the kinks are ironed out.

Here is the new laptop order:

Now my 1 concern. I ordered this on the spur of the moment and now that I look the ram seems a little pricey. Those of you that upgraded on your own, how did you do it. Did you just get it with the base 512 and then but 2 1 gig sticks? If so what did you do with the stick that came with the comp?
I hate having a nice fresh order and then realizing that because i was annoyed and rushed it that probably need a order change whie the order is still so fresh heh.
After the crap i went thru with the desktop , the ships in 7 days advertisement on the site next to the m5750 is soooooo sweet.
Thx in advance for any comments / suggestions,
Rob

I also wont mention that Im a huge gamer and that now that ive done a little reading ( after order was placed of course) I see that the aurura 9700 is the better gamer, bleh. When will ati have dual cards available and I wonder if they would work with the present 5750. Also wondering why we can get a core 2 desktop with a nVidea card either single or sli and the damn laptop doesnt have that option.Ill stick with the m5750 unless one of you guys beats me with a stick and convinces me otherwise.Maybe in the near future they will come out with a dual ati option or at least a nice combo card like the 9750 but for ati

So those of you ordering the ram from newegg or wherever just get the stock 512? what do you do with the 512 after you buy the 2x 1 gb sticks....sell it or what. Since ive been waiting so long im afraid to call and downgrade unless the savings getting it thru newegg or wherever is substantial. Factoring in ordering and shipping then doing the switch....and do you save the 512 that comes stock or what? Lemmie know asap if i decide to change the order it will be tonight or not at all.Really looking forward to this baby. One other thing. Online I can find alot of reviews for all alienware laptops aside from the M5750. when I do a search for 5750 reviews all i get is directed back to this site and some reviews from peep here. Which is fine , but i was looking for a review from cnet and such. Since my origional attempts at a alienware the last 2 months were all desktops, can I assume the M5750 is a new release?
Thx
Rob

Well Rob,

I personally ordered the 5750 w/ the 512, b/c u save 100-150 bucks by ordering it from an outside vendor (newegg is out of the ram, and I ordered it from tigerdirect).

the 512, u can try to sell, but who will honestly want 2x256mb of ram? you can always sell it w/ the system if u decide to sell it later on...

If you are a huge gamer, then the 9700 maybe something more to your liking.

I'm more of a multi-tasker/movie watcher, and very minimal gaming so the x1800 is more than enough for me.

Obviously w/ the 9700 you have the SLI and it roughly scores twice as much as the 5750 in 3dmark05...

but, although I have yet to see any benchmarks on the cpu...I bet the duel core 2 beats out on cpu power n multi-tasking..

plus, I like the mobility, and battery life of the 5750 vs. the 9700...

either way, both are great machines...so keep us posted

oh and keep in mind that the 9700 i believe are now coming out w/ 7900 GS 512 mb

vs the x1800 w/ 256mb and a single gpu vs 2 7900 GS w/ 512mb

Any word on crossfire working on a desktop or maybe even a laptop setup? heh , at this point I already have this one ordered so for my own sanity I will stick with what I have. I wonder what nice single cards the ati team will come up with in the near future. Hmm even if by some miracle you can get ati crossfires for laptops , I wonder if the 5750 is even set up to accomodate it. Anouther dumb question...At a later date will this motherboard support a nVidia video card? If so I am wondering why Alienware isnt having that as a option, or sli.

Took a quik look at alienwares site and saw that the 5550 has the same motherboard and supports a nVidea card:
Video/Graphics Card More Info
128MB ATI Mobility™ Radeon® X1400
256MB NVidia® GeForce™ Go 7600 [+$200 or $6/mo.]

When you click on the motherboard in the configurator there is 0 info.

I honestly doubt that there will be a crossfire mobile version, considering that crossfire requires an external dongle (not sure if that's even a word, but whatever) to work, while sli has now been integrated and before used a small bridge...

as far as what mobile gpu's ATI plans to come out w/...who knows...they have been losing market share of the GPU market for the past couple of yrs.

and the x1800 mobile has been out quite a while by techology standards...

i'm not even sure if our GPU's are MXM or upgradeable....

Sorry I couldn't help ya out more, but that's all the info I can come up w/ for the time being =P

Thx. The 5750 is a nice machine , but the gamer in me is being evil and wants me to go the 9700 route lol. But so far im stayin strong. I thought I read it was a MXM which is good right? I thought I read that a XMX makes upgrading easy. If thats the case maybe they will come out with somthing stellar heh

Heh , I wonder if this excerpt from the ati site means they have a leg up once vista hits:

ATI - The Graphics Power in My Windows Vista™ Capable PC
Coming soon is a new era of personal and business productivity, ushered in by the latest operating system from Microsoft: Windows Vista™.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
“Microsoft will deliver a series of graphics innovations with Windows Vista that provide a customer experience that is second to none. We could not have achieved this without our partnership with ATI. From day one, ATI played a key role in helping us design and validate the new driver model at the heart of Windows Vista and ATI has since developed extremely robust and performant drivers that highlight the capabilities of our new operating system.”

splatter...I'm not sure I can help any, but here are a few comments.

Upgradability of video cards in notebooks is always a gamble...MXM is supposed to be upgradeable, but who knows what technology will come next. Point - there are no guarantees. And, no, the x1800 doesn't have to be upgradeable for Vista...it will work fine with Vista. And with the Core 2 Duo CPU, you'll be fine when Vista comes out and be able to run the 64-bit version if you want.

DirectX 10 is the next update in video cards...probably available sometime late this year or early next year, and who knows when the mobile versions will be ready? I wouldn't worry about this, as most games won't take advantage of the new tech for a while.

The x1800 is a good video card, and you'll get good performance with it. As Yang said, if you want better gaming performance, then perhaps the m9700 is a better choice.

The m5750 is a great notebook...I'd stay with that one, and then you can upgrade your desktop sometime next year when all the latest/greatest comes out...Good Luck with your decision.

Splatter,

The m5750 really is a nice machine. While you probably cant go "balls out" with the 1920x1200 native resolution screen w/ visuals maxed on all games... it will perform quite well with the 1440x900 and high settings. IMHO

I have only played WoW and Far Cry. WoW completely maxed out at 1920x1200 is silky smooth. Farcry with 1920x1200 and default "high" settings is also silky smooth with no slow down.

Edit - also, if you're into MMOs at all. I am in the Vanguard Beta... and it also performs well in native resolution and mid/high settings (Unreal 2.5 engine).
