Well, to put a long story short my 600m was replaced with a 640m. It doesn't have dedicated graphics but im happy cuz I got a dual core processor, more memory, and a bluetooth card.

Nice how'd you pull that off?

I didn't do anything. I was told I would get a system that would be equivelent or better than my 600m. I told them that the system was $1,200 and I expected a computer that met the original investment. And suprisingly they did. I was hoping for a E1505 with dedicated graphics but the 640m works great. Although the graphics suck I can multi-task on a lot of other stuff that i really need for school. The dual core is shocking. Stuff that would take several minutes now takes several seconds So least to say I'm VERY happy!

I've been debating on whether I should do the same. I really like my 600m but I don't like how it overheats so easily when playing games and it's really annoying when it's my only system for 3 weeks at winter break. I'm really curious as to whether or not the E1405/640m can play things like BF2 at low settings though as I can with the M9000.

I didn't ditch it. I felt bad when i closed the box up. Like saying good bye to a god friend i suppose. The 640m(E1405) is NOT a gaming computer. I have a hard time playing Halo on the lowest settings. I would much rather get something like the M1710 or the M1210. I'm leaning more towards the M1210. But I'm not sure if I want to get rid of the 640m right now since its been pretty trouble free. What would you guys suggest? I like taking my computer to Star Bucks and on road trips, etc. So....?

See that's the thing. If I get my 600m replaced then I will definitely want something with dedicated graphics. I'd really like the 1210 but I doubt Dell would send me that and the 1505 is a bit big for me but I might be able do deal with it. I'm also sick of my 2200bg disconnecting when it's right next to the router but doesn't disconnect when it's farther away. I really don't know if I should call dell and complain about the overheat issue when gaming. My brother has never had an issue with his 5150 overheating while gaming though. I also don't like the fact that Dell made the 600m fan speed based off the GPU temperature and not the CPU temperature. I've confirmed this with I8kfangui. The CPU temp can get as hot as it wants but the fan will not turn on until the video temp hits 40*c and thats the slow speed. It his medium at 45*C and then high at 50*C. My CPU temp hit an all-time high of 75*c on start-up yesterday.

Just don't know what I should do. . .

I've had the same problem and I have to agree, its irritating when the CPU is cooking away. When the CPU would do that I would I8Kfangui and just set the fan speed to max and let it run. Course i had headphones so there wasn't any problem with noise. You could always demand a computer replacement that has dedicated graphics. I bitched about the graphics but I didn't push the situation cuz i just wanted/needed a new laptop. maybe your wireless card is defective? I haven't had that problem.

I think I'm going to call Saturday. I have so many small issues with the comp it's annoying. I do love the 600m for what it is. Definitely one of the greatest systems Dell has ever made.

I have gone into i8k and manually forced the fan to max but I should have to do that to make sure my desk/dorm room doesn't go up in flames.

If I get a replacement I'd like it to be the E1505. I made mockups of the 1505 and 1210 out of paper to see just how big they are. 1210 seems too small for me and the 1505 is only .2" deeper but a couple inches wider than the 600m, and a pound or so heavier so I can deal with that. I've noticed that the 600m build quality has gone downhill too over the years. My mom has one that's about a year or so older than mine and the screen hinges are really really tight. I got mine in Feb. '05 the hinges are wobbly but i've dealt with it. A friend of mine bought a 600m right before they went out of production back in January and her hinges are extremely bad. Makes mine look great. She is also going to call Dell sometime soon about that.

Like I said though I'll probably call Saturday.

Hope it doesn't sound like I'm trying to rip Dell off but the system issues are increasing and I can't deal with that.

I'll have to agree with you on the hinges. I got mine in August of 05 and those suckers wobbled like no other. You aren't ripping Dell off becuase when you bought the laptop you were expecting a system that would work like its supposed to. But.....I think you will have to have parts replaced for the same issue like 3 times and REALLY bitch before they replace it. Well thats what I had to do atleast. Mine i had the fans, heatsink, etc replaced a few time but after the last motherboard replacement it wouldn't start up in the morning. CUZ IT WAS TOO COLD!!!! And it would only be arounf 65F in my room. When the system would finally start it would say the system had to shut down becuase of overheating (WTF ) So I just bitched and bitched until they would give me a new laptop. They wanted to replace the motherboard and I told them NO this is the 3rd time it will be replaced and I NEED this for school. I do not have time to have it break down all the time. Course I'm kinda a hypocrite cuz I had to wait 7-10 business days to get the laptop.lol I'm just a pain in the ass with Dell LMFAO

Well I ended up calling yesterday. Had nothing better to do. Here's what went down:

Selected the wireless connectivity option on the phone which sent me to the wrong department. I told the guy about the downclocking and yada, yada, and he said that if I could recreate the problem with him observing through Dell's site then he would have it sent in. My system actually ran perfectly. So no go there. I told him about the hinges being loose and he is sending a tech to replace the hinges. Took about an hour to hour and a half to be done with him before he said I would have to call back about the wireless issue.

So I figure I'll use Dell chat for the wireless issue. That was a no-go they said I have to call. Ugh. So I call and as I'm uninstalling the old drivers, the system does something weird and on startup I got stuck with the background image and a mouse. Nothing more. So I get transferred back to tech support that does windows issues. Tried a repair, and no go so now I have a fresh install of windows.

All the tech people were great and I can't complain about them.

Looks like I'll be keeping the 600m for now.

overheating?

Removing both heatsink(s) (CPU/ChipSet/VGA), and applying artic silver should cure that. I added a piece of aluminum from a floppy disc, to place in between the VGA and the heatsink, applying artic silver between both sides. I leave mine on 24/7, and temps never get out of hand, and that's a good thing when gaming. NO MORE CHOPPY CHOPPY (after 10 minutes of game play) LOL! Now it's time to see how far I can set the FSB.

Underneath the palm rest where the hard drive resides, is a cooling plate for the hard drive. I added a couple of pads between that, and now I have a luke warm palm rest, not that it was ever really hot to begin with.

flemsy keyboard?

Just out of pure bordem, I took a keyboard from a XPS and put it on my D600. Wow! Didn't expect it to be nice and firm, what a difference!

Just thought I would share that, later all!

None of the advice above will let you play HALO at max settings, but it will make things much cooler. Even when I do get another notebook, I plan to keep the D600 as long as I can, good notebook!
Yeah I think i'm just going to keep the system until I get out of school in a couple years then just get the new top XPS model to replace my 8300 and 600m.

my experience with dell has been ask for supervisor and simply DEMAND that you recieve a new notebook. tell them it is for business and you are losing money. that it was obviously defective in your opinion and in your tech's opinion and you want another sent to you as an exchange immidiately. case closed.
