3D Games on a Linux Notebook! Yes it is possible... Pls post your experiences - Page 2

Cedega uses a few closed source libraries as well I believe, which they have to license.

In as far as Ubuntu, ABF it may not be a good idea to suggest people wait till 6.10 until we have seen it more. I havent tried out the Beta due to not really needing to, but the design philosophy is get all the bleeding edge into this one, meaning a possibility for less stable, but then work with that software to get it to Dapper quality over the next two releases. As such it may(Probably will) be that this release is not up to the quality of dapper, but is more bleeding edge.

OF COURSE i want to support! But you see i am really cheap.

My way of supporting something is with free software or information.

yup kinda what happened with Breezy (unstable crap) and Dapper... Breezy implemented the new technologies and Dapper resolved them over time. Its time to inovate again by releasing Edgy, with Edgy +1, perhaps even Edgy+2 bringing it up the rear to be the next "Dapper". I haven't tried any of the Betas either since I have a very comfortable Dapper config right now which i dont wanna give up but I read some good reviews.

Edgy+2 I believe is their roadmap for an equivalent to dapper. I find this strategy interesting because, unlike Suse, Mandrake, etc. They will have effectively 3 distros, aimed primarily at at least 2 different sections of the market. The stable distro, aka Dapper in this case, will definitly be aimed at enterprise level for some time(3 releases), along with servers, but the bleeding edge will be aimed more for the 'average' linux user that tends to run on the edge anyways. Not real sure about the second step though... At any rate this is somewhat different from what we have seen from the OS market as far back as I can remember, where they promoted only the newest product they put out. It will be interesting to see what comes about, instead of putting out XP, NT4, 2000, and Vista, and then fixing bugs for the next 6 months anyways because they always turn up, put out an official distro clearly not aimed for the market that wouldnt pick it up immediatly anyways, and then fix the bugs in it before releasing it to that market. Should be interesting to see how it works, though comparing commercial OSes to a free distribution of Linux is always difficult at best. Seablade PS Finally getting around to pushing CSS into my head, so hopefully I will have a new linux info site up before long for people to contribute to. Random side note.

speaking of separate promotion, for those of you who don't know, ubuntu will not be sending out Edgy through the ShipIt program...they'll continue sending out Dapper 6.06.1 since it is the LTS release. Edgy +2 like seablade said will most likely be the next disk distributed through ShipIt. As always all realeases (and betas) are available on the download mirrors though.

and for the first time ever I am not compelled to ditch my Dapper for anything else, not so much even Edgy.

To use a very famous quote.... If it ain't broke, don't fix it. To be honest Dapper will work for most people for quite some time, and as long as the repos are updated with somewhat up to date software, will be perfectly fine for many uses. I think this is probably what Canoical is planning on, though that last part is a guess on my part. Seablade

I'm probably gonna hold off using Edgy for a while on my main machine... Dapper is just running too well at the moment. The only thing I'd like to upgrade, tho, is gnome. I could care less about the other upgrades.

If it never brakes you'll never have a reason to fix it and then you'll be stuck with the same thing forever. You're supposed to break things. That's how you learn.

in other words, if we didn't break things on purpose, we'd all still be using Slackware 1.0

Heh yall take the phrase a bit more literal than it was intended But I am sure you knew that.

If the item serves its purpose, and is not really imporving things by putting work into it, don't bother.

or roughly simplified... If it ain't broke, Dont fix it

I have been using Mandriva 2007. Don't bother. It's broken and the repositories don't work. What a pain in the patooty. Now I am back to Edgy.
