To all, we have waited long enough but now comes the time....linux is finally gonna be a true accelerated 3D platform for the public....this is with the release of XFree86 4.3.0.

I am currently cvs ing the latest tree, which is XFree86 4.3.0rc2. Gonna try it and let you guys know. The benefits: Fully accelerated architecture and support for our beloved ATI 9000 and 9700 series Joy, gaming is finally coming to linux.....the world is changing right NOW.

Does this mean the mobile version of the M9 will be supported? I know the differences are slight, but I always though that mobile versions had other tweaks and things that the full AGP card versions didn't have...

I will be interested to see how this works out...

Finally, what is the ETA for 4.3.0?

Yes Mobility

Lets first realise the obvious, the ATI drivers for linux support the mobile chip. The mobile chip as very very few differences with the Desktop version, only on powersaving.

this is a part of my /var/log/XFree86.0.log

(II) FireGL8700/8800: Driver for chipset: ATI R200 QH (AGP),
ATI R200 QL (AGP), ATI R200 QT (AGP), ATI R200 BB (AGP),
Radeon RV250 Id (R9000), Radeon RV250 Ie (R9000),
Radeon RV250 If (R9000), Radeon RV250 Ig (R9000),
Radeon RV250 Ld (M9), Radeon RV250 Le (M9), Radeon RV250 Lf (M9),
Radeon RV250 Lg (M9), Radeon R300 AD (R9500), Radeon R300 AE (R9500),
Radeon R300 AF (R9500), Radeon R300 AG (Fire GL Z1/X1),
Radeon R300 ND (R9700 Pro), Radeon R300 NE (R9700/R9500Pro),
Radeon R300 NF (Unknown), Radeon R300 NG (Fire GL X1)
As you see the M9 is listed. The drivers behave just a tiny bit different than the ones on my desktop Hercules ATI 9000. Like they crash if switching from X to console several times.

(--) Chipset Radeon RV250 Lf (M9) found

The release of XFree86 4.3.0 will yes bring 3D throught the latest DRI to all mobile M9 chips.
Will let you know the perfs and when it works

Anyone here given Fresco a run? Looks very interesting, at least when compared to the X system. It'd be nice to see how it performs with a card like the M9.

Cheers.

Really? Seems free as far as I can tell. I can't try it out cause I don't have permission on the linux boxes, though.

Cheers.

drivers

anybody got the drivers for the touchpad for mandrake 9.0?

Synaptic Drivers ....

You should use Synaptic drivers. Here is the link :
http://tuxmobil.org/touchpad_driver.html

Hope that helps. Put the protocol of your touch pad on PS/2 until ya have the drivers installed. The scroll will not work then ;(

thanx

thanx...and as an update, i do have my dual boot, win and linux mandrake. the only problem was the 1024 error, and not understanding how to use my full 40 gigz, not just 8, or under 8, which is the 1024 limit.

1024 cylinders limit ....

Umm, i didn't thought this was still a problem...with the latest versions of lilo and grub....Anyhow, the best way to get around it is to create a small (200/300 megs) /boot partition at the start of the disk, so the kernel can be read independantly of where the rest of the Operating system is located....hope that clears things.......

okay

cool. easy, but this boot partition, do i format it? and if so, with what file sys? (i can create it no problem) and as far as the 1024, im not sure either, maybe suse 7.0 doesnt have support of that yet...err, doesnt have the new lilo version that can defeat the 1024 mark.
Thanks alot.

/dev/hda1 /boot
/dev/hda2 windows
/dev/hda3 / Linux

Go to www.tldp.org and look for the dual/triple boot how to. It is very well written and will clear it all for you. File System of /boot has to be linux ( what ever you use ext2, ext3 or reiserfs ).
Let me know if you can't find it i'll post you the link.
By the way, upgrade your suse asap, 8.1 is out i believe
