Some issues of my new laptop, help

Hey guys im new here i bought an hp pavillion dv2025nr and im having some issues with it, first of all that bloatware really gets on my nerver so i tried installing xp pro because it came with home and it gives me internal set up error, it aint a big deal i can deal with home till vista comes out, now another thing is almost everytime i reboot it the update software from norton has trouble closing and it takes forever to reboot. Now i tried reinstalling home again but the recovery partion software or whatever it is wont format my hard drive, th.en i end up with the old programs in the hard drive and they dont work so its a pain in the trunk to go and delete all the old programs and install them again. Im in the navy and im traveling to italy soon so i need to have it on top shape. Any help would be greatly appriciated. I need to know how to format the drive and start fresh. In your position, I would obtain a copy of XP Pro with SP2 and a legal key, then find out who made the hard drive - probably Hitachi - download the hard drive tools, use them to wipre the drive, then start over with the XP Pro install.
