Limited or no connectivity

Well I've been having some problems connecting my laptop to the router in my home. I did have a older router that worked with my computer very well, but it had some problems so we replaced it with another one. But now I'm not even able to surf the web. It says it is connected, 54mbps speed, and excellent signal but I still can't go on any sites. My sister's wireless works fine with the same router and so does my other sister's hard wired connection.

In Wireless Network Connection Status there is only 40 packets sent and none received so yeah I'm confused. I resetted the router and turned my comp on and off and still doesn't work. Help much appreciated.

do you have a firewall by any chance?? and can you see the computer you're trying to connect in the router settings?
also might want to make sure you don't have it set so only a limited number of connections can be made.

I just tried to turn off my firewalll and still no luck. I can see the name of the network I'm connecting to. How do I check the limited number of connections part though? Other responses or advice would be welcome and rep given please.

you didn't mention the brand name. On a Linksys router (which I own), you just go in to the router setup and there will be something that says maximum number of DHCP users. You should set that number to = the number of connections you'll be making, including anything hard wired in.

I have a linksys as well. Do I go on the router setup on my computer?(the one that has the non-working internet connection)

Start -> Cmd -> ipconfig

Copy and paste results.

If it's an ip address of 169.xxx.xxx.xxx, it's a DHCP issue.

Every computer that's connected to the router will come up with the same config page.
Might be easiest to use whatever is wired into the router though.

Sorry for late response guys.. school and crap work sucked.. I type in "ipconfig" it has like no information on the "Connection specific DNS Suffix". On this computer that I'm using now that is hard wired there is like some letters.mystateinitial.comcast.net. so it has an address but my laptop doesn't. How can I fix this problem, it seems the network didn't assign my laptop an address?

All of the other information is same on both computers like ip address, subnet mask, and default gateway.

i say reset the router, restart computer, if its Linksys call up their support and HOPE AND PRAY you get a female.

aside from that, i had that problem with my sisters comp, iirc, all i did was get another randomly generated new web encryption key number, then retyped it manualy and it worked just fine

but call linksys, if you cant find their number its

Linksys Networking Products
Web Site: http://www.linksys.com/support/TechSupport.asp
Phone: 1-800-326-7114

they have pretty good support, and have yet to get annoyed with them, just when its a guy they are harder to understand
