Woo!! 9300 conversion time!!

OK, so maybe not full conversion, but i figure i might have a little fun with my girl.

So, i have a 9300, and its in great working order; but, the case is a bit scratched, and i have never totally liked the white. So, i got to looking, and tracked down some spare parts to convert her. However, i hate the ultra shiny XPS rear, so i wanted something else.

I found a new XPS 170/Gen2 touchpad for $20, and the front (black) bezel for $25 (prolly a bit much, but eh...). The hard part, was tracking down the rear cover.

I really wanted the look of an M90, but it took forever to get the right part #s (they didn't seem to easy to track down). Either way, i finally found them, and called Spare Parts. I knew how to open ("Sorry, don't have my service tag with me.."), but they were hesitant all the way.
They wanted to know if it was personal or business, and if I was SURE it was an M90 i had. The CS Rep realy became hesitant when i told her what parts i wanted , and even asked who told me the numbers (laff! I asked her why she needed to know :P Finally, i got to order the parts. I tried to order:

CF202Assembly,Bezel,Liquid Crystal Display,Notebook,M90
FF054Assembly,Cover,Liquid Crystal Display,Notebook,M90
F8466LCD Hard Screw Cover(2) (RoHS)
F8468BUMPER, LCD, RUBBER, SMALL

Of course, it would figure that they are out of 8466 and 8468, so i will have to use the bumpers i have now - no big deal though.

So, in the end, i would like to think it will look exactly like the M90 - unoriginal, i know, but i will be one of the only 9300 with a converted one! Just hoping they won't cancel it...

Anyway, will keep people updated on when i start getting parts. Good times!

Divine Madcat,

Curious how DELL does things.

If you're sending them money to purchase parts... Why are they giving (trying) to give you a hard time?

Warranty I can see, but anytime they sell a part they make a profit...

The m90 is comparable to the 9400 or m1710 right? if so the palm rest wont be a straight swap you will have to bend and cut some plastic... a guy did the same thing when he put an m1710 on a 9300 he had.

Actually, it is warrent i suspect. Becuase of the parts i am buying, they want to know what laptop to mark as modified. From what i have read, this is fairly common practice (not willing to sell certain parts). But, i did manage to buy them in the end.

Actually, the plam rest and bezel front are from a Gen 2, so there will be no need for cutting anything. The only thing that is M90 is the LCD back cover - so it will give the full M90 look without the cost.

That's a nice mod. Thanks for posting the pics. I'm not too fond of the white trim either. I've been looking for the front bezel that goes around the edge of the bottom case. Is that the one you scored for $25? Did you run across a part number for that piece anywhere? Or find someone other vendor that sells that piece? I need to replace my bottom bezel & really, really want to go with black, instead of white.
