Is it okay to keep laptop on for all day for downloading like desktop? - Page 2

Mechanical failure is probably the biggest notebook failure--dropping the notebook, hard drive servo failure, drive read/write head-to-platter "stiction", etc. . Probably followed by heat-related thermal stress (expansion/shrinkage causing solder joints to fail, for example). Followed after that by failing el cheapo capacitors that are "drying out" due to a bad formula by the Chinese when they stole it (the formula) from Japan.

All that said, I've been running my Dell 9300 for over a year, many a time running it for days at a stretch. No problems.

I want my laptop to last for long time just like my desktop. But, is it okay to leave laptop on for THAT long? Thanks!

It's perfectly fine to leave a laptop on that long, espeically if you're considering a DTR laptop.

It's been said before, but I'll repeat the important stuff:

- Make sure that you have plenty of fan space for your laptop to breathe
- Make sure that you close the lid / set a screensaver / set the monitor to go dark after a few minutes to prevent burn-in

to many myths and no truth, so here i am

1) yes you can keep your laptop on as long as youd like

2) why would you need a cooling pad if you have the laptop on for what you wanna do and it never over heats? you think because its on longer it generates more heat?

3) hard drive on means it fails faster? well yes, but its just like having a desktop on the whole time, time will kill anything, why be anal and perfect about your laptop when its ment to be ruff and knocked around a bit and traveled well, you didnt spend 1500$ to let it sit on a desk all day and night 24/7

3) lcd burn in.....screensaver, or close the lid, nuff said

anything else anything tells you is prolly flim flam that has no real truth to it

keep it on all night and day, i did that to all 6 of my laptops ive owned thus far and not a single thing has happened, nor was i worried a single thing would happen

have fun uploading/downloading!

keeping you laptop on all day is actually better for both the hard drive and the fans, the shutting off and turning on of the laptop cuases the hard drive and fan to start spinning again after its been shut off. this wears them both down, so leaving your laptop on is better and perfectly fine. a piece of advice like mentioned above is simply to dim you screen light and have your laptop plugged in to AC with no battery inserted (have the battery about 50% before storring it)

as for "burn in", just use Widnows power management to turn of the display after a set time....easier than setting any screensaver...

cooling pad is your safest bet. . Future shop has em for like 40 bucks sometimes.
