Overclocked and me not knowing?

Ok, so i traded for this laptop on the forum 2 years ago and have been concerned about the CPU temp I8KfanGUI is reading. On idle the CPU will range from 65-70 (HD is 40's) which is a cause for concern when i read that most people are getting theirs in the 40 degree range. Im thinking that it was overclocked and never stated to me.

I dont have a cpu bug or anything, idle it runs at around 5-10%. It reads 2000mhz on the System info and i have a NVIDIA FX Go5200 (64mb) card. How do i find this out? Or could it be somthing else? Thanks!

www.cpuid.com Download their utility CPU Z. It'll tell you what CPU you have, it's stock clock speed and its current real clock speed.

it reads 1998.8ish MHz so i guess its really a 2.0GHz chip. Maybe the inside compents needs to be compressed aired out. ill try that tonight. thanks evil.

Probablly some dust covering the fans.

ALright, so for the first time i took off the cover that covered the graphics chip, and the little fan protection thingy had a big dust ball covering it. Im down to 53/55, yay! I suppose thats good, but why are people getting in the 40 range? If anyone has some more ideas please let me know.

PS. I keep my programs very clean, with a limited amount on load up. All virus, spyware, etc updated and run

I guess you were half way right but still theres a concern for it.

Surfing the internet im at the low 60s. I dont think its a software issue because ive reformatted the computer 3 times since owning it and every time its been in the 65/70s on normal usage. HELLPPPPP

60/70s CPU usage? jeeze I use to have 80% on my desktop but thats because of a virus its a CPU problem also send it back and have them replace it for you thats the problem or that you have an overheating problem just send it back if you have a warranty and have them repair it all.

Alright new info on idle temps...

Before Cleaning: 65/70
After Cleaning: 50/55
Unplugged: 44/45

Its weird, i unplugged it while i was surfing the net and it was up to 60 (my new idle temp i guess, better then before). And i just watched as it went down, one degree at a time, took about 3mins to drop 16 degrees.

Why would this happen by simply unplugging it?

Well, assuming it's a Pentium M processor, it happens because when you have it plugged in, it is running at the full 2 GHz. When you unplug it, Speedstep is enabled to save battery life, and clocks the processor down to 1 GHz.

Is there a way i can permently slow it down to say 1.5 or 1Ghz?

You could install the Dell Quickset application and set it to "Max Battery", which will run it at the slower speed except when needed.

Alright, so I put Quickset back on my computer (havent used it in forever), set to max battery, changed some of my little preferences. Looks like my cpu is running at around 600mhz, which is decent for what i do, Itunes, Internet, AIM, Word. So right now im cruzing along at 44/49C Im happy, thanks for all the info. I guess my chip is too powerful for my fans :-D

i8kfangui program and maybe rmclock might help as well. I believe you can undervolt your processor, which drastically lowers cpu temps.
