Sager is from Taiwan?

I read in an article posted here that Sager is from Taiwan? Is this true? Would it be cheaper then to buy from a Taiwanese reseller?

Also - this will be my first laptop purchase. My PC runs all the time - 24 hours a day, seven days a week. I guess this isn't "nomral" practice for laptops - how long is TOO long; when leaving your laptop on? and what harmful effects will leaving your laptop on for an extended period of time have?

do higher RPM drives run hotter? - if so will the heat difference be substantial? (to my hands as well as to the performance of the system).

thanks!

Sager is a US based clevo reseller. Clevo is in Taiwan NOT sager, sager purchases the barebones from clevo, like the screen and the case, and then puts everything else in.

To answer your two questions...

1. As long as you keep the air flow to the fans clear in whatever model you get you can easily run it 24/7 as most people do on this forum.

2. i have a 7200 rpm and it does not get an hoter then my 4200 rpm on my 5650. Laptop hds do not get hot, as long as there is plenty of air flow through the bottom your fine. Heat is not a problem that i have with my 5680, my old 5650 with a P4m that sucker would get hot.

You also may find that US resellers (overall) are less expensive than a Taiwanese one and also should offer better buyer protection under their warranties. Then again, you could probably get a really cheap price from a Taiwan vendor, but as a buyer-beware sort of thing.

I think there are some threads regarding this in these forums, try searching around for them. Also, Sager buys a LOT of Clevo machines, so they do have the lower price from volume sales (such that it is).

By the way, you'll have a very difficult time finding any notebook that doesn't originate in Taiwan, or at least from a company headquartered there. Most all come from there, despite whatever logo may be on them. I guess a few come from Korea.

i think because of the new technology in the 7200 rpm drives, they manage their power consumption much more efficient and thus produce as much, if not less heat than a 5400 rpm drive.

24/7 is fine. My 8890 when not being moved between client sites is always powered on and running. As Spaxspore says the main thing is to ensure the air intake vents (underneath the laptop) are clear. Don't make the mistake I once made of putting the laptop on a table with a table cloth on it. Not a good look .

is there going to be a version of the 8890 with the radeon 9700 in it? so far the specs released have been of a 17" notebook; while dell has released a 15.4" WUXGA radeon9700 notebook. Will sager release a 15/16" notebook with radeon 9700? and will i be able to order it before .... say April 1st?

Maybe if you ask the same question ON April 1st you might get some interesting answers...

Only the Sagermasters know that one dude and they are not letting on. Or to quote a very funny British TV show about the vagaries of political life called "Yes Minister":
"In the fullness of time Minister."

hehe. I dunno whether to just go all out with an 8890 or wait for the radeon 9700. >.< I'm leaving to Japan mid may/early june so I need to order soon - really soon. .... times running out for me.

You will probably know about the same time anybody else does, though I don't think there's much chance of the 8890 being upgraded further, its a dated model (yeah, over half a year old). Hard to say what SAGER will do though there's nothing on the CLEVO site nor any of the other SAGER similar brand sites. That doesn't mean it won't happen, but its not likely. Things are changing, radically. The 8790 will likely be the last of the PCI class notebooks. I would say that given there's nothing on any of the usual sites even hinting at such a machine, its very unlikely it would be available within a month. I would imagine CLEVO engineers are very busy with PCI Express type designs for release this summer and fall. That's the future, the 8890, and even the 8790, is the past.

Or to put it another way, there are only five kinds of knowledge in the world:
1. what you don't know you don't know
2. what you know you don't know
3. what you know you know
4. what you don't know you know.

awww man. so i'm buying something thats on its way out....
bad timing for me to get this job and go to japan!!! bad timing indeed.

ifrit, I'm in Japan. I've been looking for a laptop for some time now and am buying mine online in the States. Probably be a lot easier if you got yours now rather than waiting 'til you got to Japan. But then again, it depends on what you're waiting for and how much that's worth to you. Is the 9700 something that you really need to have? Is it something that is going to make or break your system?

Not necessarily bad timing... just depends on what you really want/need.

hmmm i dont want the 17" WXGA screen because i'm primarily a Gamer - and I play a lot of old games... which would mean they wouldn't be compatible with the new 17" screen. But using my computer for primarily gaming, would mean that the video GPU is very important... so the 9700 would be an important thing for me.

I am going to buy my laptop before I go to Japan, because I figured as a matter of course that it'd be better/cheaper to get one from north america than from asia.

I really want a 16" UXGA screen - so that narrows my choices down to ... like nothing. or a 16" SXGA screen - i wouldn't mind either 16".... but i cant find any SXGA screens... *shrug*... thats whats most important to me.... I *was* waiting for the 9700 so that i could watch the prices of the 8890 drop ... but ... damn the 8890 IS SO BIG!!.... >_<

its hard to make a decision. Aestetically - i dislike the 5680... but the same goes for the 8890 because of its size.... Maybe Sager isn't the right company for me? I dunno anymore. I don't know what I want to get. *sigh*.

Well I do know - a 16" screen SXGA/UXGA, with a radeon 9600/9700. Its quite simple - but ... that narrows my choice down to ... pretty much the 8890.... ah well - i still have a month to decide. what is the 17" WUXGA like? anyone know what the native res for it is?
WUXGA = A Display Standard referring to a video adapter capable of a resolution of up to 1920 by 1200 pixels.

How much have you looked into older game compatibility issues? I haven't looked into it much- just figured that Where There's a Will, There's a Way.

You are quite correct there. A Fujitsu N5010 (well, the equivalent- it has a different designation here) costs around $3400. It's about ~$800 cheaper if you look around for the Fuji stateside.

You're in exactly the same position I was in for a long time. I was dreading the widescreen and wanting the 16" UXGA. But like you, was frustrated w/ my options. Finally said Screw It and aimed my sights for the 8790.

I know the feeling. Glad I'm not the only one that thinks the 5680 looks like a major vehicular accident And I, too, was hesitant to carry a rebadged refrigerator around (3 HDs, tho'... that's cool ). I was looking for alternatives last week, but just wasn't finding anything worthy of my attention (plenty of nice 15" lappies, but once you hit 16", the fields narrows considerably). So yes, I know exactly how you're feeling. Nothing much I can offer by way of suggestions, either. *shrugs* Hope you find something that fits your wants/needs.

yeah I haven't done much research on 17" WXGA gaming.. but the fact that you have to do research says something about the screen/compatibility issues.

Sure where theres a will theres a way - but I don't want to spend a week trying to figure out how to play Fallout on the laptop. It'd be nice if the 16" SXGA screens were still available (1280x1024) because they seem to be the best/have the best user reviews. Though watching movies/playing (some) games is going to look awesome on a 16" UXGA (1600x1200) even though the laptop is gigantic.... And I can't really afford the 3 harddrives, so I don't know if I'll be able to take advantage of that.

I don't think i'm going to go with an 8790.... the 17" 1440x900 res is just too skewed for me. I'm hoping that the release of the 8790 pushes down the prices of the 8890 and others and I'll be able to get more for the amount of money i'm willing to spend.. but that wishful thinking. have you ordered your 8790 yet? Its going to be great to watch TV and movies on there ... i saw a toshiba one at futureshop and it looked amazing...

Too bad the 9700 isnt available for any 16" lappies.... and yeah - the 5680 looks so bad because, #1: its 2 tone, and SILVER - silver ALWAYS rubs off, #2: The front control "deck", (the little LCD + play, pause, back, forward buttons) is slanted in a diagonal - should be straight/flush to the case like the 8890....

so the 8890 is a lot nicer - but huuuuuuge. heh. Ah well. i'll prolly end up settling for that. >_<
