Which company makes the best router?

Hello,

I am switching from DSL to Cable internet. I am curious what brand of routers are more reliable. For example, Linksys, D-link, etc....

My parents had a D-link, but it died cause of the firmware not upgrading correctly. But I did like the setup screens for the d-link.

Did a search but didn't see what I was looking for.

Thanks,
Jim

You're probably gonna get at least 3 or 4 answers to this question..
but I'll start with saying Linksys has always been good to me. The very first wireless router I ever bought was a d-link and it couldn't get from upstairs to my daughters room downstairs. That was about three or four years ago and I'm sure their quality is better now...

thanks!! I have always heard of linksys being the best. I wanted to see if that is still the case.

I'm sure they're probably not the best, but they're solid. I've owned four of them. One died and the other two are older models that I upgraded to get more speed. My lastest is the WRT54GS w/ Speedbooster. It's probably the most solid of them all

linksys is a fairly good router, but my friend had his WGR54 (or something like that) die on him after a year, but he grabbed another one anyway....and i must admit they work fine.

my other best pick is netgear. i've been using mine for 2 years now, solid!

for the love of god stay away from d-link....

I have a belkin from wallmart and its awesome...I had a DLINK and its a POS the wireless never worked right.

the belkin pre-n router is very good. good speed, and good range. works with a/b/g if i remember correctly, and their "pre-n" if you have the card, but thats not necessary. if you can hold off, i would wait about 3 or 4 months to buy one, because the next generation n routers will be out by then. so far the n routers that are out now are a bit below par.

BT Voyager 2000

I have that one and it never loses signal or strenth and the signal goes upstairs and downstairs (I have a 3 floor house)

deff. correct about getting different answers--lol. Are there any routers out there, that are able to limit shared users bandwith. For example, I get 4mbs and the rest of the users get to share 1 mgbps.

O yeah, Any of your routers have a really good setup screen--many options.

I know for a fact that Linksys routers have that ability

awesome!! so dlink sux...i knew it!!!

That's usually a unanimous decision..
it's the argument of which is best that's always up in the air

true!! I guess, I could go to BB and try the Lynsys, Belkin, netgear. HAHA, buy all three and keep what I like.

Thanks for the help everyone!!

I have a feeling I will end up with the linksys.

are all routers created equal when throwing online gaming into the equation?
online PC gaming? or you talking about hooking a 360 up?
if you're talking 360 then the rules just changed.. MS recommends using A over G, so you'll have to find a router which supports A and those aren't so common...
if you're talking PC gaming, then that's up to your internet connection, the router won't have much of an impact.. and if you want the best speed it's best to go ether anyhow
BTW, might want to check their restocking policy. I know my BB stores here would charge you up the a$$ in restocking fees for the two routers you didn't want....

I was thinking about both. Best buys, here dont charge a restocking fee, unless its on certain items I am unaware of.

If I go that route I will just ask!!
Definitely make sure you ask first and let them see you write down their name.. they hate that

I personally use my 360 with a G router (WRT54GS) and it works fine. Supposedly it'll work better with A because it doesn't have to share BW with anything else that way, but when I'm using the 360 nothing else is using the router anyhow...
maybe someone knows more about an A router though
post #18 of 51
A is supposed to be more secure but mainly for the fact that most of the world uses B/G....so A just goes untapped.

hmmm, posted my reply but it all disapeared--wierd. I went to walmart and saw some Lincsys G+ routers with mimo(?). Does that mean I need a G+ wireless card or something?
you'll need a Linksys wireless card that'll work with that specific router.. MIMO is something Linksys made and won't work with any other brand, unless you want just vanilla G speeds. If you do go the MIMO route, make sure you get the 400 and not the 200
