BIOS frozen

Hello all! heard lots of great things about this forum from another non-computer Board where I also post, so when I had a problem, this was my first place to turn to :-)

I have an old Inspiron7000 (yes...I know). It was my wife's old one and she gave it to me when she upgraded a few years back. I only used it for internet access when I was away and for the occasional on-line game in the living room or whatnot. Anyway,it held up great over the years, although very slow, but that was expected with a P3 @ 700mhz running XP.

About a month ago, the problems started. This was the first opportunity I had to post about the problem. At first, XP would start to load, then freeze up on the blue welcome screen. I thought it was a problem with something on startup, so I entered setup and turned on the 'quickboot' option. Ever since then, it won't go past the initial Boot screen. It show the memory being tested and the mouse being located, HD/CD drives located as well, then it just freezes indefinately.

I tried the XP recovery disk as well as a boot disk, but nothing. If I try to enter setup now, it says it's entering, detects everything mentioned above, then freezes still.

Anyone have any ideas?

Thanks!

Jason

I would, but I can't get into anything. As soon as I power on, it starts it's test, then freezes, not giving me a chance to do anything.

Remove the CMOS battery for like a minute or a little bit more and re-insert it.

Where exactly is it located? I took the entire system apart (empty case shell, really!) and could not locate it.

This is very frustrating. The computer itself isn't worth anything by this point, but still, it was very handy to have and I'd prefer not to buy a new one (plus the wife would flay me alive).

It's one of those button batteries. Look in your manual, it should say how to replace it and show you where it is located.

Nope--nothing button-like. Apparently it's welded directly to the MoBo. Time to junk it I suppose.

Welded to the motherboard? Those are all replaceable.

If you have 2 memory modules take one out and see if it boots
