How to upgrade/replace HDD

Thread Starter
I have an IBM T42. I wanna upgrade the 40gig HDD to a 100Gig.
But how do I do it, without losing all the info on my present drive.
The present drive is loaded with ibm recovery software and my data.
Is there a pain less way to do this?

ghost it or acronis true image it!
and no, u will not lose anything,
do not know about ghost, nut with trueImage u can even do it under windows, hook up ur new drive to an usb external is the best way about it, follow the instructions
my 2 cents - partition the new one (60/40 may be?) - u'll never know when you do need the second partition for something else other than just data storing

cheers ...

Yeah, get a 2.5 external USB2 enclosure for 12.99....

...slap in your new HDD of choice, hook it up, and clone your current HDD to the new one with Symantec Ghost or Acronis True Image.

Finally, install the new HDD in your PC.

Can I just get a laptop hdd+enclosure and use it as an external hdd? No need to power-up the enclosure, right?

Is the usb transfer speed fast compared to the usb hdds in the market?
thanks.

if ur usb ports can support 2.0, it is decently fast
hdd is measured by size/accessing speed, usb is measured by xfer rate - what do u mean by usbhdd?

cheers ...

Only a reminder if you don't know already:

Retail USB HDDs = Enclosure + HDD + more money

Retail USB HDDs --> lazy person.
Enclosure + HDD --> smart person who likes saving some dollars.

No technical differences... I mean, if you put a 2.5" 7200 rpm drive in a 2.0 usb encls. then your DIY solution will be even better.

Thanks for the reply guys.

I knew they were the same. Just wanted to make sure.
The best transfer rate I've seen in a usb hdd was 1gig per minute with usb 2.0. I think that was a memorex usb hdd.
Can I get that kinda transfer rate with a 100gig 7200rpm disk?

Any recommendations on the enclosure?

Probably not as Memorex was probably using a desktop drive. But heck, it's only going to be a one-time thing, and the difference isn't going to be tremendous.
