XFX PVT71UZDF9 Geforce 7950GX2 1GB GDDR3 PCI Express x16 Xtreme Video Card - Retail
Model #: PVT71UZDF9
Item #: N82E16814150160

My friend is placing his newegg order. He is getting the above video card.

1) Is the high price, but high performance of the card worth it?

2) We were looking at 20.1" lcd monitors that do 1600x1200 resolution. It looks like the widescreen ones off newegg aren't quite as good for resolution. Do many games (first person shooters) support widescreen resolutions? Also, would getting a regular 4/3 monitor be better then widescreen for gaming? - as far as quality, price, etc.

Im not sure...I prefer widescreen over 4/3....and from now on most monitors are gonna be widescreen...a 4/3 would make me feel my rig was outdated or something.

As far as games supporting them im pretty sure they do (wether you have to edit something IDK) Im guessing that future games will have widescreen in mind.

Also does the monitor have to be from newegg? I hear getting Dells from costo is....good.

In my opinion, widescreen gaming is completly worth it. Its always nice to have more on the screen at once, in gaming and in normal windows. Not to mention, natural human vision is "in widescreen". I've completly swiched to widescreen and I'm never going to go back, if I can help it.

Most new games support widescreen. So thats nothing to worry about.

The price of the XFX 7950 is very high, in my opinion too much to spend on a non-professional graphics card. But that is MY opinion. No matter what the card is going to offer bleeding edge totally extreme performance. What kind of gaming experience is your friend looking for? It might be necessary for him to have this powerhouse of a card.

Heres the list of neweggs widescreen monitors that are 1900x1200, the widescreen version of 1600x1200. However, the 1680x1050 monitors are quite nice too.

Widescreen or not, a monitors quality depends on who made it. A good company usually will make a better monitor than a bad company. The price of a widescreen is usually higher than a normal monitor. If its worth it or not is up to whos buying it and what you need it for.

I think that 1 card is basically two video cards in one, isn't it? I wonder if he was going to go SLI, if it would be better to do SLI with two cards, or just get this one card?

He hasn't upgraded in about 4 years, has enough cash for a good pc, and just basically wants to get a really good one for gaming.

That video card is the current best if you can afford it...
and WS LCDs are the future, no sense in getting an old school one. I love my 1920X1200 on this..

has he considered getting an "average" GPU now and upgrading in 8 months? DX10 and all?

I mean 4 years without an upgrade means he should be "impressed" with a normal video card....make today a stepping stone and splooge tomorow?

splooge??

that was really funny if it was a typo
that would be a good idea though. get a lower end GPU now and spend the extra money on a bigger and better WS LCD. The LCD will work fine with DX10, but the GPU won't

Yes. Since more and more games are supporting WS res.

I have widescreen and like it especially for gaming.

Yes WS is completely worth it..once you game on one you'll never want to go back to 4:3.. I like 1680x1050 but the 1920x1200 are nice..

Dell actually makes nice WS monitors.. Bought my hubby a 20.1 then turned around and bought myself the Acer Ferrai 20.1 with glossy screen... love it!
