LAN/Internet connection problem

Hi

I hope someone can help with this!

I'm having real problems connecting to the internet via the wired LAN on an Acer 5612WLMi.
Basically, the problem is as follows:
I've plugged the laptop into my router (a BT Voyager 240) using an ethernet cable from the Broadcom 440x adapter. I can ping the router, browse to the router configuration page, ping the other computer on my home network, and see its shared folders in "My Network Places". If I ping outside the local network, it resolves the ip addresses okay (eg it picks up 64.233.183.147 for www.google.com), but then comes up with "Request timed out." I can't browse internet websites either.

Interestingly, I also get "Request timed out" if I try and ping the laptop IP address from the other computer. If I ping it by name, it says "Ping request could not find host mylaptop. Please check the name and try again". Yet I can see the laptop fine in "View workgroup computers".

I'm using fixed ip addresses on the network and have never had any probems with other pc's in the past.

Any ideas?

Thanks,

Duncan

quote "in a properly configured network, 'request timed out' will mean that the destination machine is not operational (ie: powered off or disconnected from the net)"
in this case, set up on ur laptop

firewall? workgroup? ip range? tried to run the network wizard again? router settings?

Hi qhn

In answer to your queries:

Firewall: Both laptop and other computer use Windows firewall only (I've tried turning it off on the laptop, but still no joy).
Workgroup: Both are on a workgroup called "Home", and both can see each other fine through "My Network Places".
IP range: Router is 192.168.1.1, laptop 192.168.1.5, PC 192.168.1.3. I also have another PC and a mac on ...2 and ...4.
Network Wizard: Tried running this for connection to a home network, but the problem remains in that I can connect to the home network, but not outside it.
Router settings: Not sure what I should be looking for here, but as I say, it works fine with the other three computers, it's just the laptop that's the problem.

Cheers,

Duncan

Er...

Okay, now I feel really stupid. I changed the IP address to 192.168.1.2 and it worked. Doh! (I could've sworn I'd already tried that but there you go).

So thanks!

But why....? The PC I'm posting from now has been reconfigured to use the IP address I had the laptop on originally and it works fine, which means I have all 4 units sorted. But I'm still confused as to why the laptop had a problem with that address.

Well thanks, now we can get on with enjoying our lovely new laptop (and it is very nice)

Cheers,

Duncan

EDIT
I've just checked more thoroughly, and even though I set the IP address of the laptop to 192.168.1.2, it has acquired 192.168.1.6 for itself. I now have really no idea what's going on but, well, if it ain't broke...

The laptop has switched back to using the "Auto" profile in eNet management, which just picks up an IP address via DHCP, and I've set my router to start dishing out addresses from .6 to .254 (hence the 192.168.1.6)

I've deleted the new profile I'd added to provide a static IP, and I'll just leave that idea for now, until I understand better how this eNet thing works.

Cheers,

Duncan
