Fujitsu S6120 vs Sony V505D

I am planning to buy a ultraportable laptop lately and have been doing quite a bit of research on it. I've narrowed down my choices to 2 notebooks which is Fujitsu's S6120 and Sony's V505D (V505DH to be specific).

The specs of the Fujitsu is
S6120
Centrino Pentium M 1.6
400 MHz bus speed
13.3” XGA TFT
512 MB RAM
40 GB (4,200 RPM)
Intel 855GM video
Integrated Intel PRO Wireless 2100 (802.11b)
4.5 hrs
4.3 lbs
2 x USB 2.0 port
CD-R 24xCD-RW 10xCD read 24xDVD read 8x
3 years warranty
$2499

while the specs of the Sony is
V505DH
Centrino Pentium M 1.4
400 MHz bus speed
12.1” XGA TFT
512 MB RAM
40 GB
Radeon 9200 32MB
Integrated Intel PRO Wireless 2100 (802.11b)
2.5-3.5 hrs
4.39 lbs
2 x USB 2.0 port
CD-R 8xCD-RW 10xCD read 24xDVD read 8x
1 year warranty
$2499

I am having alot of trouble deciding which notebook to choose.
Some of the PROS I found the S6120 has over the V505 is:
-13.3" screen size (12.2" for sony)
-3 years warranty (only 1 year from sony)
some CONS are
-its has integrated graphics (sony has the ATI 32mb dedicated mem)
-24bit color only ***
-shorter battery life than the V505D ***
***(not too sure about the last 2 pts, if anyone can, please clarify)

I'm a university student who needs this laptop, i do a little bit of gaming, video/graphics editting, programming, etc.
Please reply with some suggestions and reasons why you might choose one over the other.

Thanks in advance!

DO you mind telling me where you got a price like that for the v505? I do not know where you are located but COMPUSA has a special going on till friday of a v505 with a 1.5P-M that is selling for 1600 after a 300 dollar rebate.

Not even SOny has a price of 2400 for the V505. But maybe this is in Canadian dollars?

Amazon has a similar deal on the 1.4

Actually, I am looking for more info on the V505, there aren't much reviews around for the V505D versions (just one from pdabuyersguide or smth). I only see reviews for the earlier versions of V505 and those weren't rated pretty high, I'm wondering if it's the same for the V505D model or later. That's why im not sure which one to choose since they are both EXTREMELY similar!

Well there is a guy here in the forums that owns one... swayee.

Yup, checked that out, thanks for the great review
just a couple of quick questions if you don't mind,
1) Is it absolutely necessary to have a 3 year warranty for the V505 because its an additional $300-400 (Canadian) to extend it. What are the odds of a laptop breaking down in the 2nd and 3rd year of purchase?
2) In terms of preformance, which is better? the Fujitsu S6120 or Sony V505D?
3) Alot of the reviews on the V505 earlier models (ie. V505AX) got some bad ratings, is this similar to the later models like V505D?
4) Tons of comments have complained about the trackpad being really bad (ie. moving on its own), is this true?
5) The color settings is max 32bit right? If so, does it make a BIG diff between looking at a 24bit screen and a 32bit screen? (I know the max screen color settings is 24bit)

thnx in advance!

I dont think you should compare the Fujitsu against the Sony because the Sony has a dedicated 32mb. Average notebooks (P-Ms running intels integrated graphics), get scores of about 30 fps in Unreal Tournament 2003, while those with a dedicated graphics solution and P-M get about double that (I am refering to one that had the 32mb ATI 9000, which is the same as the 9200 on the sony only rebadged).

So in essence the graphics is what the Sony really excells at.

Thanks for the insight Enderet. Your help is greatly appreciated!
Is it possible for anyone else to answer the remaining of my questions?

Difficult questions to answer since the 505EX I ordered isn't here yet

The question you asked about performance has already been answered: The Sony will be the better performer because it has a dedicated GPU (Graphics Processing Unit).

#1: Normally any PC, if the parts are defective, will break in the first two weeks that you own it.

#3: The D series was rated as the best laptop in it's class in last months Computer Shopper magazine.

I don't know about #4: The trackpad I tried on a Sony 505BX was fine. I liked the was the BX looked and performed so much that I ordered the EX model.

#5: I've never noticed a difference.
