Trying to decide between Thinkpad T60 and XPS M1210...

If it wasn't for poor build quality, poor support, and the fact that thinkpads are awesome, i would get a 1210. I like the way the M1210 looks but i'm interested in the build quality and how it is straight out of the box. I'm also interested in battery life with/without a 7400 go. I'm really looking for an ultraportable with power. The only reason i'm even considering the 1210 is because dell has C2D configs while thats still 2-4 weeks away with lenovo. Can anyone help me out?

EDIT: T60 prices are so low right now that i am very tempted to buy one and do a cpu switch soon after i get it...

I just ordered the M1210 two days ago. So far they haven't even put it into production... and customer service doesn't even pick up the phone until TUESDAY... (Off Saturday/Sunday and Monday is a Canadian holiday)...

That combined with the total douchebag customer service rep. that lied to me and wasted tons of my time about taking a coupon (who the rep. after simply accepted without any trouble) has basically already soured my relationship will Dell.

So basically I'm saying, yeah, Dell can be douches, but still I've heard great things about the notebook which is why I ordered it. but, I've own an IBM before and I really liked that machine as well...

As someone that works on Dell and IBM Laptops. I have to say that IBM isn't the gold standard in quality that I've been hearing about. I mean Dell isn't without their problems, but IBM isn't much better. They just have better support. The last thinkpad T series I worked on had the chintziest latch I'd ever seen. The hooks were made of extremely thin plastic and has a paper thin piece of steel linking them together. My D820's latch is a single solid piece of chrome plated steel. The Thinkpad's lid is a VERY solid piece of Magnesium and my D820's lid is rather flexible. They're both good machines but I wouldn't say IBM is "OMFG TEH AWESOMES" I also hate working on IBMs, they have an unimaginable number of screws (in six different sizes) And they come apart into twice as many seperate pieces as a comparable Dell would. The superior tech support though does make Thinkpads worth the price difference vs a Dell.

keep in mind that practically every part is made and assembled somewhere in taiwan/china/korea/japan/india/ireland.... that basically applies to every major laptop maker and often quality of a product relies on where it is made.... it just depends on the quality of the asian contractor that a laptop maker chooses to use to make its parts. i guess dell being so big has massive bulk purchase ability giving it low prices which is basically why people buy from them -- good quality for a low price

i can't say for any other services since i've never owned any other laptops before, but i've been very satisfied with the xps support, and i've been reading a lot of posts that sing the same tune.

1 thing i hate about ibm lappies is that they've switched the left ctrl button with the fn button... extrememly inconvenient and honestly pointless

Thinkpads are overrated.

speaking from personal experience. IBM is nice XPS is better. I had a T60 in my hands and i like the XPS better. Performance is similar IBM/Lenovo is a bit over rated you are definitely paying for their name.

One thing though is that the 1210 and the x60/x60s is what you should be comparing. A very good friend of mine has the x60s and he loves it but the one thing I did not order it because of was the fact that it has no optical drive unless you spend money on a docking station. For me personally I want one. I know I could use a usb thumb or portable external but i just like it this way. After long and very considerable thought I ended up with the 1210 but honestly it is whatever makes you happy.

Good luck - it's a tough decision
Cheers!

Having owned/used plenty of IBM lappys before, I've always been happy with them. I don't think the quality is quite up to the level it used to be, but they're still plenty good. That being said, I'll be ordering a new M1210 this coming Friday to be my personal laptop since my new employer won't buy or give me a lappy, and I have school coming in October.

Frankly, they both have their pluses and minuses; but the Dell's features, Core 2 Duo and the nvidia 7400 have tipped me in their direction. A guy I know at work just bought one a few weeks ago (an M1210), and just playing with it for a few minutes, it seems like a very solid piece.

We'll see.

Since i've heard so much about thinkpad keyboards, how are the keyboards on the 1210? I need something with a bit better keyboard than my i9300, which has a very weak keyboard. I've heard that thinkpad keyboards are awesome but are they any better than a 1210 keyboard?

do you know why dell's sending its core2duo products so late? i ordered mine 8/28 and it says that the estimated shipping date is 9/13. something wrong with it for sure but i don't feel like dealing with customer services... goh...
