17" notebook with matte (non-glossy) display?

All I can find are glossy-style displays in 17" notebooks. Can anybody recommend a current or even old but possibly still available model to look at? This is for occasional surfing/etc. in a secondary room so it does not need to be a speed daemon.

Thanks,
-Mike

Not to flog a dead horse, but my initial reservations about my glossy screen evaporated when I really looked at it, and I have a 24" Dell 2405fpw (matte) sitting right next to it, the difference is huge, glossy > matte.

There is glare and reflection, but a little adjusting fixes this.

I had kind of ignored Dell because with Texas tax their prices are not that great and the Inspiron is way ugly IMHO -- I am so sick of silver noteboks! But I did not realize the base screen was old school. Hmmm...

Why no Gigabit ethernet? I am really surprised this is not standard now. I'd use wireless mostly but every now and then could see jacking into my home LAN to do a big transfer or work on my photos which are on a seperate server where the Gigabit really speeds things up. But it does have DVI out which is another thing I want if I can get it just for future expandability/use.

I also like the Toshiba P100 and HP dv9000t but I think both only come in glossy -- unless I'm reading their literature wrong.

Not sure how big of an external monitor via DVI each could drive.

Dell really gives it to you on XP Pro. $150 vs $59/$79 for HP/Toshiba. Maybe I will just wait for systems with a Vista upgrade coupon to come out. That will likely be $200 saved and perhaps October? Although I doubt I'd switch right away, I would probably eventually.

I wish I did not do .NET programming + have so much darn software for Windows. I might just junk it all for Macs (I do have an old G4), however. Some of the UI bits bug me -- and has since I had a NeXT as my primary workstation a lonnnggg time ago -- but I like the Mach OS and UN*X command shell (vs. Cygwin which I use on Windows).

The 17" MacBook Pro is soooo expensive for my use. I'd have to research boot camp more to know whether I'd have compatability problems.

What's your budget? The m90 has gigabit.

gigabit isn't the standard now because most people don't need that kind of speed. i mean, in general, sure, you aren't going to get the maximum rate over the network (i mean, the 100Mbps networks i've had only seem to get about 6-8MB/s maximum out of the 12.5MB/s theoretical maximum, so for a gigabit, just say 60-80MB/s effective), but there in general isn't the need for a network that would have the effective maximum speeds that would be greater than pretty much any single drive's maximum read speed (WD raptor 150GB is 86MB/s, and the Seagate 750GB is 78MB/s, and most others are 65MB/s and below (according to THG)).

so, basically, for general use, gigabit is not necessary, but for places that need it, they probably have gigabit networks for the more necessary larger transfer speeds. also, compared to most people's internet speeds (1Mbps - 15Mbps (fios)), 100Mbps is plenty, and then most people don't need the high speed within their home networks.

I'd definitely suggest you check out the newer 17" glossy screens...they really aren't too bad. I was an avowed "matte" lover, but am gradually working my way to the newer glossy displays.

When I edit my RAW photo files I notice the difference to my RAID5 file server. But there I am a power user. Can't have every feature, that is for sure!

Saw that and thanks. But I don't need all of it's workstation graphics. Based on what I've seen out of the Toshiba P100 and HP dv9000t, I'd not spend more than $1,400 with tax/shipping. Since this is not a primary computer I may even rethink some features (especially DVI and Gigiabit) since those would be occasional use anyway.

I've only been able to see them in stores where the reflections are absolutely horrible. Even of my face in the screen. I suppose you eventually adapt and see through it just like watching a tube TV?

What about eye strain? I hear people talk about this alot. Is this due to the reflections or something else?

I'm someone who tends to keep his LCD brightness lower than most for everyday use, as my eyes get tired easily. And I won't be using this for primary photo editing -- my major hobby -- so better color gamut is not really a big deal to me.

Seems like it's the Dell 9400 if I want matte.

HP Compaq nx9420 can have a matte screen (non-Brightview).
HP Compaq nw9440 has always a matte screen.
