Which manufactuers ship laptops without any hidden system partitions, and do provide a CD So the OS can be re-installed?

Dell does it both ways. Got the XP disc and the restore partition with mine. Needless to say, I reformatted 1st thing and wiped out the restore part.

Reformatting would likely void the warranty and cause problems getting Dell support.

No, it doesn't void the warranty, nor does it "cause problems getting" Dell support.
