FWIW: my son had been using a nice Windows desktop (Velocity Micro) and a program called ProTools (don't know if that's similar to what you're using) putting his music together. His machine just didn't like the program. He now uses my two year old 12" PowerBook with the same program and everything he does now works very smoothly.

For that purpose I use ABS Mayhem F22 R40 Intel Core Duo T2400(1.83GHz) bought here on costupdate store on eBay… besides that I also work with graphics on it.

alot of people been saying Powerbook is the way to go. but i kinda find it expensive. maybe i can settle for a MacBook and upgrade the ram. but still not too sure of it. some others say to settle for a Windows laptop. why i'm not getting a whole new desktop system is becos i'm going overseas next year to study you see. so i dont intend on getting a whole new system while i'm there. guess a notebook shd be sufficient for me to get my music and schoolwork done. not forgetting i need to get additional toys to make my music like synthesizer and usb midi controller and stuffs like that. know a good bank to rob btw?

Keep in mind overseas that oyu will need a power transformer for whatever you do do.

I would make the general suggestion for music laptops especially that cool and quiet are MUCH more important than overall power on a notebook. If you want overall power get a mini desktop instead for much less money and much more power, while still being cool and quiet.

At any rate the Macbook is definitly doable for audio production, and since the last firmware updates Apple's ICBM(Intel Chip Based Macbooks) laptops seem to be running quieter and cooler is what I have heard maing them an even better choice possibly. Unfortunatly none of them are truly Professional laptops until you get the port range on the 17" Macbook Pro, but most of them should work well other than that, and an expresscard eSata card isnt out of the question I suppose, though I am not sure the regular macbooks have an expresscard slot.

I recommend something that has Core Duo/Core 2 Duo and PCMCIA.
I personally like Dell D820/M65 because it is the most expandable laptop available(especially with the docking station).

the new MacBook seems to come with Dual Core. looks pretty neat. might have to upgrade the ram to 1Gb if i wanna see it go smooth like the Powerbook. appreaciate the tips u've given so far guyz. cheers*

A gig+ of ram is very much reccomended for audio computers.

Not to say it cant be done on less(My powerbook currently has 512 cause I am to poor to upgrade it, and works fine for the occasional audio I do on it while on the road away from my workstation), just that it is reccomended, especially for the only audio machine.

Get whatever has the best processor and highest ammt of ram possible and a firewire port within your budget. Most of everything else depends on the software and maybe pcmica/expresscard slot for maudio& others recording cards. I personality use to use sonar/adobe aud aka cooledit/fruitloops/acid/storm

and make sure the firewire chip is Texas Instruments. I have heard many issues with breakout boxes not working with anything else.
