You can disable sleep when lid is closed with..

Sleepless - http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/10564

or

InsomniaX - http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/22211

I would highly advise against using those programs. If you take a short second to note where the vents are for the system you will realize that leaving it on while it is closed is quite possibly the best way to turn your notebook into a space heater/toaster/hotplate and in the process almost completely hose your system.

(hint: the vent is right under the hinge therefore leaving no inlet/outlet for the air when the unit is closed)

Don't say that, I was looking forward to a rant about how crappy Apple is when his laptop melted down.

Actually using the Macbook in Clamshell mode is described on the apple website, apparently it is a supported action. I can try to redig up a link if I need to.

Now now people, I know a lot about computers and I know too much heat is obviously a bad thing. I use this program for like let's say I'm on a train listening to music and have to switch trains, I want to keep listening to music but it's too hard to carry open, bam. It's not like I'm shutting this thing all the time when it's running for more than five minutes at a time.

http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=300562

So pretty much have a small external mouse with you There is a link to the wired version from that page.

At any rate the way I am reading that it should not be to big a deal, so unless someone has proof of it not working or causing damage it sounds like it is worth a shot to me, if it does cause damage it sounds to me like apple would need to update that article.

As a soon-to-be switcher, I find this info very disturbing. You shouldnt be able to run the laptop with the screen closed? Thats how I've used laptops for the last 5 years. Back when I used to dock my notebooks then the lid was down with no problems. And for the last few years then I've kept my centrino based notebook running 24/7 on the bedside with the lid down and running small/medium processes all night with no problems.

The idea of having the system sleep whenever i close the lid to transport it from upstairs to the kitchen just doesn't fit my PC brain. Sure, I'll try the "cheats" to get it to work the way I want but if a system will get damaged from using it closed then I'm feeling its a poorly designed notebook.

Personally i wouldn't do it. The Macbooks doesn't seem to be using the Speedstepping properly or something, because it gets extremely hot, even when idle. Obviously closing it so you can move from your kitchen to your bedroom is not a problem, but if you're going to spend hrs listening to music, i would certainly be worry about the heat damage (and certainly do not use it closed in a bag).

I returned my Macbook (at a loss) because of the heat. Unreal that a 13" laptop with onboard GPU can produce that much, even just idling. Maybe once i have some kids, then i'll be brave enough for the Macbook.

Except i threw my ipod into the ipod slot on my bookbag which also happened to have nitro methane fuel in it because my mom was "sick of looking at it" and the fuel leaked onto the ipod and basically melted the plastic and most all of the external stuff, probably something you won't hear everyday but extremely true! Oh, and the train thing, just an example!
