Another dead 9880 at 1yr 3 mos - Page 2

Hey Michael- I've got a $3000+ boat anchor, too. Maybe we should go fishing.

I got an RMA for my latest disaster, but am not going to send it in to be repaired. No faith that it'll stay fixed given it's past history (and so many more like it). I'm working towards something else. You might want to talk to your reseller and see if they won't cut a deal w/ you if you've had that much trouble.

Thank you for the reply Ryu.

I think I needed to hear this from somebody else as I am afraid to dump good money after bad. I'll just save up for a different brand laptop and cannibalize as much as I can out of the SAGER then call it a day.
Try and put this whole SAGER saga behind me.

@FriedToast : My reseller went under....right after I ordered the extended warranty also:\

If I wanted this kind of stress level I would have 2 wives instead.

Michael, if you do end up parting it out, LMK. I might be interested in one of your Lightscribe drives.

And as much as the 9880's been a PITA, I don't know that any piece of electrical equipment could possibly cause the sort of trouble 2 women in one house could cause.

Another dead 9880 at 1 year 4 months

This is problem #3 for my 9880 purchased June 2005. The first problem (July 2005) was the "blue screen of death" when playing FarCry. Sent it in and they reloaded XP and drivers. Second problem was garbled video from the Nvidia Go 6800 Ultra. Sent it in and they replaced. Now, blank screen. Don't know if it's video or motherboard. I'm almost afraid to find out.
Anyone hear of problems with the Nvidia Go 6800 Ultra (bad lot of chipsets)?

I traded mine with someone on forum I was having stuttering in some of my games and was tired with messing with it. Seaker I had that problem in far cry turned out its that realtek sound driver. I didnt have to reload windows tho just change out driver. Another way it was avoided was to take out the hardware option in far cry or use my sound blaster external card.

I think mine is video related also I suggest giving it up thats what I did.

Started a thread on my gateway I mislabled the model thoe MX6453 is what I got for $849 at Best Buy. The thread says mx6463 tho LOL.

Im happy with it. Im playing same games I was on my sager.. even far cry just have to set everything to low but overall I feel like this notebook will be more stable. You just have to sacrafice the nice screen, higher res an all the options on.. ha ha

Well after 1 year and 4 months my 9880 stopped working and displayed "operating system not found"error. Sager Tech Support said most likely it was the Hard Drive controller which requires a motherboard replacement. Another $600.00 with labor. This is the forth time this laptop has been in for service. I am out of warranty and need the computer for work. Needless to say, this will be my last Sager laptop.
Hopefully they will replace the laptop motherboard with something that will last more than a little over 1 year.

This is such a horrible thread. My 9860 Died right after warranty expired (about 1 year 2 months). I sent it in, lost all my data, they told me everything was just fine except a "dvd controller card". It's been running fine since. The repair ordeal was horrible, and Sager's unwillingness to claim any responsibility (along with cheerleader tools on this forum supporting Sager) made me a permananent detractor of the company.

I'm horrified to hear about so many consistent people whos laptops are dying almost immediately after the warranty expires. Sager appears to fit the bill of a company trying to scam people into buying low quality high powered stuff at reasonable prices, waiting for the warranty to expire, and shrugging.

Despicable!

my $3000 9890 died on me 4th time. (powers up, no post, no nothing). 1 year and 3 months after it was bought.

needless to say neither me nor any of my friends will ever touch sager again. nor will i spend a dollar more to repair it.

here's how similar thing works out for dell: http://www.businessweek.com/ap/finan.../D8MJTVH80.htm
Quote:
Plaintiffs claim the computers are susceptible to overheating and motherboard failure. The problems often occur just after the expiration of a one-year warranty, the plaintiffs said.
Quote:
The plaintiffs claim five laptop models sold by Dell's Canadian subsidiary, Dell Canada Inc., are defective. Dell settled a similar lawsuit in the U.S. over one of the models, and litigation involving the other four is ongoing.

The suit, announced Friday and filed with the Ontario Superior Court of Justice, claims Dell was negligent in designing the computers and sold them even though the company knew of the problems.

i wish someone started a suit vs sager over their 98x0 line.

Sager 9880-The Nightmare Continues

Rather than start a new thread, I'll just post my 9880 woes in here. Two days ago I brought my notebook home, turned it on, and started up Counterstrike. The screen then flashed to the dreaded BSOD, and crashed. When I turned it back on a few minutes later, Windows said it was verifying the system, then giving the error message that a file was corrupted. Now when I try to turn it on, it stalls during startup, eventually displaying the message: "OS not found." When I looked at the BIOS, however, it looks like the HDD is still recognized in the boot order, and RAID/ATA is still in ATA mode, not reset to RAID. My question is, since my system is now out of warranty, how should I go about diagnosing and fixing this problem? Should I try booting from the Windows XP recovery disc? If at all possible, I'd like to save the information on the HDD though, I've got a lot of work on there I can't afford to lose...Thanks in advance for your help and replies.

I dont own my sager anymore but I always browse this thread to see how many users continue to have the issues I had.

Tactical. If you dont have alot to work with part wise. I would just use your XP disc and do a repair install. If you get it to boot then find a way to move your important info off the drives. Then I would reformat and reinstall from scratch.

Once you get rebooted you could go online and download some harddrive or low formating software to make sure you clean the drive off well and check for errors.

Sager will not support what they sell. I have a 9860 with a bad GO 6800 video card. Sager's response was:

Subject: RE: NP9860 (Case:10137)

Ron
These card has been already phase out. We don't carry them no more.
You can upgrade your sys to a better video card ( nV GF Go 7950 GTX w/512MB ), this will cost you $1100.00( including labor ) plus shipping.
This upgrade options will include a new Mother Board, a new ACA adaptor, and the video card.
Ty

I don't need a faster video card. Anyone got a GO 6800 or X800 for the 9860?
