Found it. There's another long bolt underneath the card reader that serves as screw thread. I got it out now

Thx for everthing. I'll keep you posted on any progress.

Yeah, got it. Though I found it myself, after taking out the card reader. You were right about it, it had to go out
Now I only have to find a suitable jack...

I've given the mainboard to one of my mates, and we've already ordered the required parts for the repair from Conrad, which should arrive in the next few days.
We've chosen an AC jack which can be fastened to the shadow case housing itself with a screw on top of the connector hole, so it has maximum hold for plugging in and out. Also the AC adapter pin will be replaced. Instead of the old right-angled plug we will use a straight one, since the old one got in the way with the mic and phones plugs, and also didn't fit 100%. My mate is really a pro at fixing and building electronics (amateur radio operator and such things), so I hope the entire power supply layout will be much better than before

Quick update on this one: The notebook has been running fine with the new AC adapter for more than a week now, absolutely no problems so far. My mate did an excellent job on it and also took a few pics from the soldering job, which will follow shortly when I find some time to host them.
However, we decided to leave the input connector as it was, since it also fits perfectly well with the new adapter

Thanx for the disassembly guide and all the valuable input, qhn "you're da man"

Cheers mate...

Here are the pics:

The entire job in its completion (note the AC adapter wasn't replaced, since the old one fits 100%): http://img91.imageshack.us/img91/7891/sany0049ro0.jpg

Addition: The cutting off of the broken AC jack was necessary to solder out the 5 pins of the jack one after another, since you can't solder them out at once without the risk of overheating and permanently damaging the mainboard (just in case u wondered).

totally brilliant. it was an excellent idea using that type of jack with hold-on support from outside.
this one is not going anywhere soon!
thx for sharing - have a "liter" (or 2, or 3 ..) on me

have u seen the new targa pic with the red carbon fiber?

Hey, really nice work on both of them mate. Sweet. You are very talented at those things. I spose they're both yours. I wish I had only half of your skills. Though I like the emachines better, colorwise, and the tatoo is just too cool. If I had the guts to start such a mod, I'd give it a light silver carbon fibre look, similar to the targa's original color. Maybe I'll give it a try sometimes when there's spare time for that (winter is coming, for sure).

man, u had ur machine apart, that was 95% of the work, wrapping plastic with adhesive vinyl would be a piece of cake (ahem, providing that it is not a dry cake)

funy, i brought both of the laptops to works, and the majority liked the red one better. It is quite hard to see thru pics, carbon fiber has this reflection-look and can get very light/bright when not in the shade

When I boot the laptop into windows then sometimes the laptop actually starts to really charge it, but not always. Moreover, if not being charged, despite indicating so, the battery is discharging, although the LED on the handrest indicates AC operation and windows reports battery status as "charging".
VERY weird behaviour, this is ...
Also noticed that the power plug which goes into the laptop sits a bit "loose" in the socket, and that upon wiggling only a bit the screen flickers 'cos of ATI's powerplay adjusting GPU clock speeds. Prolly the battery isn't charging properly because of some faulty connection there? But then: Why is the battery discharging although laptop clearly states AC operation. Is my battery dying, or has this something to do with the overall power supply?

Any hints appreciated...

I am having this exact problem right now.. except no sparks................yet.....ugh!

I took it apart and the connector is just fine, and steady so I dont need to resolder it.. is there anything else that can be wrong.. i heard there is a lot of battery recalls lately..

I dont know what else to do about this.. its driving me crazy... i suppose i should buy a new battery and see if that is the problem? perhaps another cord etc ? thoughts?

Measure the voltage at the power cord plug tip. Then wiggle the cord. The voltage should be a steady ~18 volts. I'm guessing you have a wire break near the plug.

If you're handy with a soldering iron, this is moderately simple to fix.
