8204 software conflicts?/ problems

Hi, I'm wondering if anyone has encountered these problems I have with my 8204 or is there something I can do to solve these problems or do I have to bring it to Acer service to have them sorted out.
I started using my 8204 (bought in May) more in July and I noticed that it started playing up. First with the MSN live, when I'm typing it was really slooow in showing up then it started to lag. At one point it lagged so badly that it seemed to have frozen up and even the time on the taskbar stood still!
Then I played some movies that's in my D Drive and it was fine then out of the blue it came up with error messages like "Haali Media Splitter....etc., when I restarted it to play another movie it would play just fine or it could come up with another error message like the "Windows Media Player can't play this file. This occur when another program or operation system component encounters a problem but does not communicate the nature of the problem to the player" (yet, there are no other programs running at the time). Sometimes I played the same movie for the first time, it played well without any error showing up. The second time, it could come up with "ePower .......etc" or telling me that there's insufficient memory (when I know I have more than enough) or the processor is insufficient (which is a laugh as I know there's no problem there). That's when I wil not be able to play the movieagain. This problem seems to be intermittent. My 8204 has a mind of its own so it seems!
The other problem is during startup, it would open up the startup screen then it gives me a black screen for awhile and then flips back to the startup screen again which I have to wait again before using any of the programs. Sometimes as it opens up the startup page, it would show the error "epower management dmc.exe" or shows the grey box message without any text like it's trying to show something but decide not to then disappears again.
I have rebooted a few times hoping that it will get rid of the problems but it hasn't. I don't have much technical experience and if anyone can give me some ideas of what to do to have these problems sorted will be much appreciated. My 8204 is still under warranty so I'm wondering if it will be better if I just let Acer sort these problems out. Any ideas anyone?
The other thing is, where my left hand rests on the keyboard to type, that part has gone a darker grey black colour - is that normal on the 8204? Does anyone have this problem too? Is there something one can do to clean that up?
The other thing is when I tried to do a defrag. for the first time since getting the 8204, it was doing it then it seems to freeze on 1% and nothing seems to be happening after that. After waiting it to go further for about one hour, I gave up on the defrag. - is this normal and why is that?

Thanks!

Yes, I rebooted it with the discs that one had to burn when you first get the 8204 so I'm assuming that is a complete reinstallment. Am I'm right in my assumption? I thought I better put a thread in here to see if anyone else has any of those problems or to give me some insights about them before calling on Acer. Thanks for the info regarding the warranty which is usually for hardware problems as it never occurred to me until you mentioned that.

Thanks for letting me know. After reading your post, I'm glad to know that I'm not the only one with this problem.
But is there any way one can fix that? Has anyone tried asking Acer about this problem since as there are 8204 uers who are suffering from this problem.

My advice: If defrag doesnt work, you could be in serious trouble!

Keep in mind that defrag can be unbelievably slow with FAT32, however, if you left it on for 1 hour there should be something happening. Is the HD light on?

In any case, defrag not working could be a HD problem, so you absolutely have to do a full backup of all your data, then take it to Acer so they sort it out. There's nothing else you can do if the HD is going.

In my previous Acer, a 4600, I had 2 HDs die. It's not pretty. They don't die instantly, it's just a slow, gradual decline.

Maybe that will help: make sure that you have at least 25% of free space on drive before trying to defragment it. I would also recommend going to Internet Properties and clicking Delete Files in Temporary Internet Files section if you use Internet Explorer. If you use some other browser, clear browser cache before defragmenting. That will reduce defragmentation time tremendously. Besides, browser cache can grow really huge and litter your HD with lots of small files - the least efficient use of drive space, especially with FAT32.

orthorim2, the HD light is on but it took so long to get pass the 1% during the defrag. hence the question since as I'm new to all this. And I finally managed to complete the defrag! (Whew!!!) One less problem for me to deal with now. Thanks for your help.

DarthAcer, thanks for help. I did what you suggested and it finally worked although I found the defrag. to be really slow considering what the capabilities of this laptop is "supposed" to be. Since having the other problems, I feel everything seems to be slow in working, not as fast as when I first used it. Well, at least this is one less problem for me to handle. So, thanks again!

When you open task manager, how many percent cpu usage do you have?

Just as a reference, when only browsing, mine is between 0-2.

Hi, Ive just checked my cpu usage and with just 2 webpages including this one where I'm tpying and the task manager open, it is reading between 2 - 39% so I guess that is not "normal" at all? I really have no idea what is wrong with this laptop. Also I would like to ask you - when I go to Start , Programs and click ePower it gives me "EPM-DM is not running" - is that right? Reason I ask is sometimes I get error message with ePower which will pop up now and then. Thanks!

The acer software is cr*p. When running task manager, which program uses most cpu power. I'll bet it's some acer software.

kohaar, you're most likely to be correct there. Since as I'm having so many problems with this, I'm going to try and do another reboot but this time, I'm trying to get it done via the hidden partition (everything is still in FAT32) in case the recovery CDs I have is not so good. But to do this from the hidden partition, I have to check the following:
1- if Acer disk-to-disk recovery is enable or not (which I can't seem to find)
2 - make sure the D2D Recovery setting in Main is Enable (which I found)
3 - Exit the BIOS utility and save changes. The system will reboot.

I'm having problem in finding 1- Acer disk-to-disk recovery so do you happen to know how I can find this? Or does anyone know how I can reboot from the hidden partition. Any help will be most appreciated. Hopefully once I have done this, my 8204 will be stable again without (keeping fingers crossed) or less problems for me to deal with.
Thanks!!!

Heh. Fat32 is a perverbial bitch for Defrag. Please run it through the night. Its not just your laptop.
Please see other Posts i made in your other threads.. I told you how to enter the Acer Erecovery from HHD hidden partician.
Koharr actually Acer software is ok. I found the main culprit to be the ATIEVXX which ran double. It was the ATI hotkey controler. Disabled that... Found that it rendered ATI catylist controler useless.. Uninstalled ATI drivers and used OMEGA drivers and problem solved. No extream lag and no slowness...
Also When you first use it you will find a tonload of running processes... About 70ish... Which render your laptop useless...
Go to start ---> Run ---> Type in "MSconfig" (without the "") Disable ANYTHING which you dont need. Google the individual running process names to give more info if you need them or not.

Also To explain why you might be using 1% to 32% while ideling on Internet. Remember that the Intel Processor uses SpeedStep to reduce the Ghz value (and also reducing V.core value) down to about half. So it might be running 32% at 1Ghz. Which would be ok.. Remember its still doing hundreds/thousand of caculations at the same time even though its ideling.

32% at 1GHz is not ok. Running at 1GHz it uses about 2-5% here.
