Distorded screen when alt-tabbing in WoW on m1710.

Hey guys.

My m1710 is almost brand new, and I have the 7900GTX version running on the very last version of XG Mobile driver. I have not overclocked my video card yet.

My problem is when I play WoW (it may do it in other games but I just play WoW these days) and alt-tab to windows and do some stuff, at a certain point sometime between 10 to 30 seconds after alt-tabbing the screen become very distorded and unstable, everything is mixed and moving in random position. The only way to come back to normal is to alt-tab again to WoW, wich then comes back to normal after a few seconds again.

It's very annoying and I am not sure what cause it. I *think*, but i'm not 100% sure that it was doing this on the Dell driver (before I switched to XG Mobile driver)

Any idea?

I have had the same problem several times (with a BSOD on top of it) and i solved it by taking out my RAM, switching sockets and reseating them.

Now everything works fine.

I am having the exact same problem on my 1 week old M1710...I have the 7900GS card though...I have tried several different driver revisions (including the ones that originally shipped with it).......I haven't tried switching the memory around however, so I'll try that next. I only am playing WOW at the moment so i do not know if this is a problem with other Direct3D apps/games.

I upgraded my memory today (i had some already ordered) and it still does it, any other idea?

This is a driver problem. This happens everytime, when you use a driver above the 84.29. With the 84.29 everything is fine.

WoW isnt the only game with this problem. It also happens on CCS.

I have written a mail to dell, but only idiotic blah blah back. Format you pc and so on.

Because the problem only exist with the m1710 it is maybe a problem between the touchpad driver and the graphical driver. Maybe someone can investigate.

Ah...actually there are NEW Nvidia drivers i JUST tried and i think they fixed the problem....version 91.47. You can get them from http://www.laptopvideo2go.com

Make sure you also download the associated ".inf" file to use with them.
Let me know if they correct the problem for you guys.
I dont think it is the touchpad that is the problem because it has the problem with my touchpad disabled and a mouse plugged in...it DOES seem to happen when Scrolling on the screen and having wow running in the background.

I am also using 91.47 XTreme-G Mobile version
Version: 91.47-v2.50e Windows 2000/XP (32-bit) - based on NVIDIA ForceWare 91.47

I have my problem with this version... Maybe I should try your version from laptopvideo2go, let me know hoe it goes.

I'm using 91.33 from laptopvideo2go.com and am having zero problems with WoW.
I just downloaded the 91.47 version from laptopvideo2go and have zero problems with WoW and alt-tabbing. I've never particularly liked the Xtreme-G Mobile drivers, for what it's worth. I've also never really seen the point of them.
For what it's worth, WoW definitely has better image quality with 91.47 over 91.33. I don't have the odd "pixely" look I used to have anymore ingame.

I just tried 91.47 from laptopvideo2go and I have same result, i'm starting to think it is a problem with the card, my roommate have the exact same computer and he have zero problem... he is using the default dell driver tho.

one question comes to my mind, what do you guys have at your desktop settings for colors? 16 bits or 32 bits?
i'm at 32 bits whenthe problem occurs
I'm at 32bit. Also try updating your DirectX, and install the Dell system software and Intel chipset software from Dell.com.

If you're not having trouble IN the game, or in Windows, it's probably not hardware-related.

It is absolutly no hardware bug. I have 3 new graphic cards from dell in my M1710. The bug still exists. Then they changed M1710 against a new one, the bug still exists.

I change to the 84.25 and the bug is away. I will check it at weekend with the 91.47 and will see if it is away with that driver.

Hey guys.

I FINALLY found out what the problem was.
Beleive it or not, it's not the hardware, neither it is the driver.

I my case, the problem was the Dell Quickset.

Check in Quickset, then in Gaming, then in Power Schemes.
Check the Graphics performance setting.

If you have max battery, it will do the distortion at some point.
If you have max perofrmance, it will be ok.

I found out today, while I was playing wow, i unplugged my power from my laptop, and the distortion came right away in game like never before. Then I changed my Graphics settins for battery from max battery to max performance, and it went away. now both schemes (batt and ac power) point to max performance, and no more problems.

I would say, people that have the gaming power scheme disabled in quickset should not have the problem.

I talked too fast, today I finally had the problem again, so we are back to the beginning.

Anyone got any other idea?

Only happens when Alt-tab? If so, don't alt-tab? I doubt if it's the hardware if it only happens during alt-tab.

Any other info you want to give us? DirectX version?

Do you play WOW? sometimes, you can fly a long travel, and it doesnt requier you to be in the game really, so you alt-tab and go read something or check email or whatever, the problem comes from me going in windows for a few seconds, then it starts happening.

When it does happen, I have to go back in wow for it to stopm then alt-tab again, and im ok for a few seconds.
