64bit cpu and 32 bit windows?

Thread Starter
I just got a gateway mx6441 with a Turion64 ML-34 and was wondering since it has a 64 bit cpu and comes with 32 bit windows media center, is the machine only currently using 1/2 its capababilities or is it using the full 64 bit from cpu to memory and buses and not loosing much in the end?

Is a 64 bit machine any faster than a comparable 32bit computer if there both running the same 32 bit os? Or are we just waiting to upgrade to a 64 bit edition of vista or XP pro 64?

Or do they do this because 32 bit programs(and most still are) run slower on a 64 bit os?

a 64 bit CPU that is identical (except for the 64 bit part) to a 32bit CPU will perform absolutely the same in a 32-bit OS....you need to get 64 bit to feel the performance increase, which isn't 1/2 either....more like about 15 to 20% gain.

native 32-bit apps run just as fast on 64-bit XP on a Turion as they do on a 32-bit XP.....
