Restore 8104 from disk

Hi,

For my 8104, is it possible to get the data on the hidden partition burnt onto CD?

I want to wipe the entire disk and then restore from the CD.

Even if I can get the data onto CD, can it boot from it or does it need the recovery program to be on the hard drive?

Cheers, I.

If you are wanting to use your full GB of hard drive, removing the PQSERVICE you wont be able to re-install windows unless you have your own copy of windows XP, for all your acer apps and drivers have a look here, http://www.notebookforums.com/thread170762.html this will help you out.

hope this helps.

Thanks for the link.

I do have a Windows disk but can you explain a little more why I wouldn't be able to get Windows installed from a recovery disk burnt on to CD? Is it that PQSERVICE (?) isn't going to be on the CD so I won't be able to do a proper recovery? Perhaps I can get PQService on a boot disk?

This isn't just so that I can recover the hidden partition, I also want to scrub the disk before I send the comp to Acer support and I'm also thinking of getting a new hard drive.

if you just want to restore your comp back to the default settings without anything in it, just use the restore disk you burnt when you first booted the laptop, that will get rid of everything you have on there.

PQSERVICE is a small partition that basically contains the windows setup files, drivers and acer applications.

The Restore Disk just accesses the files in there to take it back to default factory settings.

The HDD will go back to being split into different sections,
1: PQSERVICE 2: SYSTEM 3: ACERSTUFF,

So if you use the restore disk, it will get rid of everything. BUT before you do restore uninstall all your programs just to be on the safe side and delete your files.

Make sure you back up all important data though.

hope this helps,

ike,

p.s sorry for the essay. lol

I actually have back up disks which came with the computer. When I put these disks into another machine, they say they only work on Acer systems.

How does the software know whether its an Acer system or not? A computer I had a while back had some special number written onto the harddisk. When I wiped the hard disk it wouldn't restore from back up disks and I had to run a special program to put it back.

So I figure there might be some identification written onto my Acer hard disk?

Any ideas?

Not on disk, it gets info from BIOS.

That's cool thanks.

I have wiped my C: drive and now the eRecovery program doesn't load when I do Alt-F10 at start up.

Given that the system back up disks supplied with the comp do not boot, is there anywhere I can get this non-Windows version of eRecovery online? I didn't see it it in the eRecovery folder that contains the Windows version.

Also, do you know if the eRecovery software requires a particular hard disk partitioning?

Cheers, Ian.

Well I've got eRecovery running from one of the recovery disks. I didn't try booting from the right one!

Furthermore its installed fine over two NTFS partions that I created with a Windows disk although the C: drive has has been converted to FAT32 and the D: drive had some funny Windows folders on which I deleted. Not sure where they came from!
