formatting a powerbook

Thread Starter
Hi,

im a complete apple noob, i dont own one and have barely used one. A friend of mine as an old powerbook(G3 i believe) and tried to install OS X 10.2 or 10.3. Apparently the install went fine but now when it rebooted(And everytime you turn it on) the crashes on the boot up(greyscreen with the apple in the middle). She took it to some apple specialists and they said its probably because of the firmware being too old and needed updating.

So to save her some money i said id give it a go and here i am. ID like to know how i should go about formatting the hard drive. I have no apple gear what so ever and a usb floppy drive handy! I also have the 9.2 and osx 10.something install disks.

If its possible would some be able to guide me through the process?

thanks in advance!

Well, if it needs new firmware those can be downloaded off the website.

Install OS 9 on it and look for the firmware update.

Installs are very easy, especially OS X. Boot from the CD by holding down the C button after the chime.
