CD Drive not working

I was trying to write to a CD the other day (Travelmate 8200) and I kept getting media errors. Now I can't even read CDs. The drive spins for a while, but the CD isn't recognized. Here's the weird thing though, it can read DVDs just fine! I thought that there was some conflicting software/drivers or something but I now realize that if I boot the laptop with a CD, it's still not recognized and tries to read it for a minute or so before giving up. This makes me think that it is something hardware related.

Does anybody have any ideas?

Thanks!

it could be that ur cd reading lense is failing - funny that this is not the first time i heard that after an error prone cd burning session, cds can no longer be read/accessed
tried an optical cleaning disk, no guaranteed that it'd work

cheers ...

Thanks for the reply. I'm going to pick up a cleaning disk to see if that helps...but I'm not hopeful...

Well, the cleaning disk didn't work... :-(

I'm thinking that it's a hardware problem - I can't even boot from a CD, so the software/drivers shouldn't even be a factor...right??

It's odd though that DVDs work fine.

What are the chances that Acer will ship me a replacement drive instead of me sending the whole notebook back?? Not good I imagine. :-(
