W3J Heat Question

Hi guys,

I have a quick question regarding the heat dissipation from the W3J. I previously owned the V6V and noticed the right palm area got quite toasty. As many of the reviews have stated, that area would get quite warm, but could be dealt with. Obviously different people have differing perceptions of how hot "warm to the touch" means. The more I had used that notebook, the more the heat issue started to irritate me. I mean, I could bare with it, but it would make my palm sweat, etc.

My question is basically this: Is there a noticeable heat build up on either of the palmrests with the W3J? I realize the side exhaust vent is quite capable of blowing "hot" air out, and that isn't much of a problem for me (same case with the V6V). I'm about 99% sold on purchasing the W3J refresh model, but want to ensure that I don't run into the same palmrest heat issue. Any help is more than appreciated! Thanks all.

the toasty palm is the only thing keeping me from clicking "checkout" for the W3J...

i want the Alienware Sentia 3200 as well, i'm sure that won't have heat issues because it doesn't have a powerful video card. i'm rather annoyed about how the top of the laptop looks, i think the alien looks cheesy.. and i especially hate silver. if they provided it in black i'd definitely get it. but... no.

so, i've gone off topic...

how toasty does the W3J make your palm(s)?

The palmrest heat issue is not warm you expect depends on how long you use. Actually, the cooling fan for cpu and gpu is small and doesn't like a desktop. When the heat sink is warm, some heat is dissipated to another places such as the cover, palmrest, keyboard..... All the material inside is metal except the boards, and you can realize about this if you take out the keyboard. For my opinion, it is normal to have a heat issue for turning on a few hours whatever the cpu is sleep mode or not.
Cheers

itty bitty laptops with power PCI-e graphic accerlators get particularly hotter than laptops with Intel's pieces of shit chip

MilestonePC, I agree.. but basically I'm wondering how *warm* will the palm rests get. I'm fully aware of notebook heat dissipation as this will be my 4th personally owned notebook.

The only reason I ask this is because prior to purchasing my Asus V6V, many revewiers mentioned there was a warm spot on the rightside palm rest, and with that, the fact that it was 'merely warm to the touch'. I soon found out after receiving mine that the 'warmness' was quite hot actually and uncomfortable (and this is even with the processor running at 800MHz and idling).

I have yet to find a review on the W3J that complains about any other heat issues other than the exhaust vent on the right side of the notebook, which is why I'm just triple-checking, if you will, on any unspoken heat properties. The air exhaust on the right side is fine with me, I've learned to adjust to it with my V6V, but the palm rest area is a different story.

Regarding the palm rests on the W3J. The left palmrest never gets hot at all. The right palm rest barely and I mean barely above what room temperature would be I guess. This is with a 7200rpm drive to so, IMO don't be worried about the palm rests they are fine. Now there is the vent on the right side but I don't find that much of a problem.

..and that it has only three USB ports. With this fixed, Id get it today.

(Its still a nice computer, though).

Most of the computer failures are due to heat related issues. Heat can kill components or shorten their lifespan. I suppose the W3J is a relatively new model to really know how long the lifespan is..

Silvr6, thanks for the reply. That's exactly what I needed to hear I'll be picking up the W3J+ today after work and will be replacing the memory and harddrive with 2Gb of Corsair or OCZ 667MHz ram and a 100Gb 7200rpm Hitachi drive. Can't wait.

My W3J does produce heat, but I notice the heat more on the right side of the keyboard than I do the actual palm rest. Basically just the area right around where the vent is. It's not annoying unless you're typing on it for hours. Even then, it only really gets hot when you're playing games/doing graphic intensive stuff. Normal day-to-day, not a real issue. Like someone said before, the right side is just slightly hotter.

Mine runs hot enough that I find the heat to be an issue on my palms but given the power from the GPU and CPU in a small form factor I knew it would run hotter then most other notebooks.

In most cases, the heat is usually from the hard drive, since it doesn't have its own fan, nor any source of heat disappation(well, usually useless ).
