M68XX sudden memory lag after crash

My M6811 has that infamous spontaneous shutdown issue related to the heat sink, but I'm fairly hardware illiterate, so I haven't felt like tearing into it yet to attempt to fix it.

Today, it happened again as I was bringing it out of sleep mode after having used it on battery power earlier to about 25% power left. Only this time, after I tried starting it up again, it doesn't seem to have enough memory to run a few rudimentary little programs at once. It lags about five minutes between clicks and reactions. I keep hearing little clicking noises from the hard drive, like it's trying to do something but can't.

Is there something I can do for this? I'm worried out of my mind. Thank you for any suggestions you might have!

Is there even a way to back up my files, though? It barely responds to anything I do.

ouch!
u can try to remove the drive and use an usb external housing (or an ide adapter) hooking up to another machine to see if it responds better. if the drive is failing then it will be real tough

cheers ...

Perhaps your laptop has a trojan, virus or spyware on it. Try running something to check for this.
