Alienware vs. Dell - Page 4

Ummm Dell owns AW now, I have a freiend who jsut bought his 3rd AW since the merger, and he's very disappointed. Seems theyre using subpar compnents now vs the better quality componenets they used in the past. My guess would be Dell has them putting together cheaper machines and charging for a pretty case. Either way, go configure a Hypersonic machine and compare the prices a 3rd way. I found the HS systems reliable and actually cheaper with a good CS to boot.

Thats what I was pretty much was going too be afriad of

But truly now I dont think AW has sunk low in the componts that they use for there system. I mean I really dont believe that they are now using bargin junk just because Dell has taken over.

Another thing when I read about Dell's take over of AW it pretty much stated that Dell would not truly touch AW and I hope this stays true.

With that said yes you are going too pay for the little alien head that you get on your laptop compared too the DELL logo on the case instead. Yes if both systems come with the same crap then yeah you should go for the cheaper one if its going too be pretty much peformance. Who cares what logo is on it then?

But truly I hope alien isnt using bargin bin products just because dell has taken over now.

You would be wrong. AW has always had problems too...just go read some of the threads in the AW forum. Also AW is still it's own company. They work as 2 different entities as stated when the deal was done.

AW isnt spot on with there products but that doesnt mean there a crappy company. The only company that I stay away from is Sony and there evil desktops. And also Acer. After reading threads from owners about there acer its clear that I need to stay very very far away from them.

It's been said before...but the two companies are operating as separate units. Hopefully, Alienware will be able to benefit from Dell's supply chain and logistics, but Alienware is doing their own design. Perhaps your friend just got a bum system...it happens - with Alienware as well as with the other companies. If anyone finds a perfect computer supplier...let me know!

I don't think that is the case, according to ---> "Alienware chief executive Nelson Gonzalez said that his company will remain a wholly-owned subsidiary of Dell, continuing its own brand, design, sales and marketing, and support. Terms of the deal were not disclosed."
"For consumers, the purchase will mean that Alienware will now access Dell's well-known supply-chain efficiencies, ideally reducing wait times for new PCs that Alienware executives said have swelled to as much as a month or more. Interestingly, the deal also means that a PC containing a processor from Advanced Micro Devices will finally contribute to Dell's bottom line. "

Dell subcontracts its vendors in a partnership deal to assist in engineering the notebooks, that is Dell engineers half and they engineer the other half.

Just because you do not see something elsewhere, does not mean it wasnt made by someone else. Dell contracts these makers to produce the laptops, and in that contract, and agreement is made NOT to sell that design to other OEMs. Do you really think Dell would allow other companies to sell the same laptops that they got, to other companies for cheaper? Hell no.

yeah I dont blast it all the time but playing with the eq with music playing I was trying too figure a way too fix it.

It only happens when its blasting, anywhere around half and below its pretty much fine.

Of course, and exactly the point that I was trying to make. Dell spent the time and money on engineering and designing of their notebooks ,then seeks bids from contractors i.e. Quanta, Compal etc. to build their design. Whereas Hypersonic, Voodoo, Sager and probably some others use a standard ODM chassis and are pretty much at the mercy of the ODM for that design.

But Delll DIDN'T engineer it! They just ask the companies to come to THEM with bids, and they choose the one they want.

Of course they had a hand in engineering it, otherwise other companies would be able to use their design. I even posted the the notebook design engineer position on this thread.

You do all know that none of the Dell laptops are built in the USA right?

NONE of them are. The only thing Dell builds here is the desktops.

You do all know Dell is an international company that has overseas offices that assist in the engineering and overseeing the production of notebooks, was that your point?

First of let me say thanks to everyone who posted in this Alienware vs. Dell thread. It's people like you, that makes it fun, and easy to pick a laptop. So without further delay, my pick was indeed the Alienware Sentia m3450. I simply could not pass up it style. Plus out of all my co-workers with their Dell, and HP's, I'm the only one with an Alienware.....ha ha!

Here's a quick run-down:
The Alienware Sentia m3450 (about $1200)

Processor: Intel Coreā„¢ 2 Duo Processor T7200 2.0GHz 4MB Cache 667MHz FSB
Operating System: Genuine Windows XP Home Edition with Service Pack 2
Display: 14.4" WideXGA 1280 x 768 LCD with Webcam
Motherboard: Intel 945GM + ICH7 Chipset
Memory: 2GB Dual Channel DDR2 SO-DIMM at 667MHz - 2 x 1GB
Hard Drive: 60GB Serial ATA 1.5Gb/s 5,400 RPM w/ NCQ & 8MB Cache
Primary CD ROM/DVD ROM: 8X Dual Layer DVD+/-RW / 24X CD-RW Combo
Video/Graphics Card: Intel GMA 950 Extreme Graphics
Sound Card: Intel 7.1 High-Definition Audio
Wireless Network Card: Internal Intel PRO Wireless 3945 a/b/g Mini-Card
Communications: Integrated 10/1000Mb Gigabit Ethernet & 56K V.92 Modem

I've had it for about a week now, and I'm in love! This system is so much faster than anything I've ever used....Wow!
I ordered the laptop with 512mb of ram to keep the price down a little. I got 2GB of ram from NewEgg.com for about half what Alienware charges. I swapped out the 512mb with my 2gb the day it arrived.....sorry Alienware! So far I have no gripes with this system. Everything works well, I'm happy. maybe in a few months I'll post a short review, but for now I'm just gonna have fun. Take a quick peek of some pictures here!

But WAIT!!!!.....there's more!
My wife's old desktop PC has seen better days, so she decided to grab herself a new laptop as well. And guess what? She went for the Dell Inspiron e1505. She ordered hers one day before I ordered my Alienware, and received it via FedEX a full week before I received my baby......now that's just not fair.

Here's the spec on her Inspiron:
The Dell Insprion e1505 (around $900)

Inspiron E1505, Intel Core 2 Duo processor T5500 (2MB/1.66GHz/667MHz)
15.4 Inch UltraSharp TrueLife Wide-screen WSXGA+
1GB, DDR2, 533MHz 2 Dimm
128MB ATI MOBILITY RADEON X1300 HyperMemory
60GB 5400RPM SATA Hard Drive
Microsoft Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005
Integrated 10/100 Network Cardand Modem
8X DVD+/-RW Drive
Integrated High Definition Audio, Inspiron
Dell Wireless 1390 802.11b/g Mini Card (54Mbps)
53 WHr 6-cell Lithium Ion Primary Battery, for Inspiron 6400/E1505

The Dell is a solid performer, and she likes it very much. Her old desktop PC was a 700Mhx P3 with 768mb of ram (max). running WinXP, and in a constant state of repair. She also got a new 19in LCD flat screen monitor to plug into her new Inspiron. I must admit....her setup is sweet.

Take a quick peek at a few pictures of both my Alienware Sentia m3450, and my wifes Dell Inspiron e1505 over here! Or for more fun, check them out on my Flickr page.

Thanks everyone!

How would you rate the performance of the two? Do either of the laptops have backlighting issues? Any dislikes that you have noticed between them? (even picky things)

If I had to be picky, I would say the following about the Alienware.
1. The mouse buttons below the track pad need to be more defined. Maybe a few bumps, grooves, or raised edges to give them a more tactile feel. I sometimes brush my fingers or thumbs across the two buttons not knowing which is left or right. (see the photo on my flickr page).

2. Maybe a locking latch on the lid? I have yet to accidentally open the lid while placing the laptop into my backpack, but I'm sure it will happen one day. I don't want to end up with scratches on my screen do to the lack of a locking latch on the lid.

3. The 4in1 multi card reader located on the very front of the laptop has a little rubber cap/cover that you simply pull off before you insert a flash card. (see the photo on my flickr page) This rubber cap/cover should be attached or tethered in some way so you don't loose it. In fact, I should just take it off and put it away. My wifes new dell has a 6in1 multi card reader with no cover....it's just a slot on the side (see her photo on my flickr page).

I have no issues with the Dell.....None! It's a wonderful laptop!!!

And....why would I care about that?
