But if the m5550 is as much a problem as this forum makes it seem, well ... I guess I'm back to square one.
I've had mine now for about a month with two incidents where the system shutdown. Once while installing Visual Studio and the second after scanning a large image into Photoshop. The Visual Studio incident may have been heat related. The second, after some research, I attribute to a Photoshop CS2 issue (evidentally, PSCS2 has some issues that will cause a machine to shutdown). My point is that we as Alienware consumers need to determine if the cause of these shutdowns are indeed confined to flaws in the product or are we jumping on the bandwagon with out looking at other causes first. Granted, these laptop do run hot. But is that an issue limited to Alienware? I doubt it. If you think about how much performance vendors are trying to cram into progressively smaller cases, and all these parts generating heat, then eventually these laptops are going to experience problems. Take a gander in other laptop forums, there are a few threads related to Gateway and Dell; I think you'll find that AW is not the only vendor having these issues.
Years ago, I supported a 600+ person sales force. We went through Dells, NCRs, Toshibas, etc. My team was sending defective laptops back to the mfgr by the crate (10-20 at a time) because of heat, hardware failure, etc. So I can say that these issues are not limited to a particular mfgr.
Does that mean that there aren't legitimate issues posted here? No. Unfortunately, some folks will get a lemon. That's an unfortunate fact. Keep in mind that this also a support thread, so people are going to post issues that they have with their systems. Look at the ratio of AW systems sold and defective units reported.
So, give AW a second look, I think you'll find they're just as good, if not better, than their competitors. I think you'll find you'll get more laptop for your $$$.
... stepping and falling off my soapbox now ...
