you don't need to buy an expensive cable. just use one of the ones included in your ethernet modem, router, etc. if you didn't get one, then just go to radio shack, fry's, lowes, wherever to get a cheapo generic one. if i didn't say it already, you do NOT need to buy an expensive cat5 or cat6 hocus pocus, gold clad ethernet cable--that is, unless you want to waste money.

network cables carry digital, not analog signals, so its all or nothing, in terms of signal quality. Digital signals are not susceptible to distortion as audio signals are. It doesn't make sense to buy "Monster Cable"-type Cat-5 cables, they are all the same thing.

Also, you gain ABSOLUTELY nothing going Cat 6 over Cat5e. Cat 5e supports Gigabit just fine and Cat 6 can't support 10Gb (you need CAT7 for that). Just go to Lowe's and buy one of Ideal's cables for like five or six dollars.

One thing to note, however, is there are 2 main categories of UTP(ie networking) cables: Plenum and Non-Plenum (ie 'normal') Rated.

Plenum cable is made with materials that do not give off toxic fumes when heated(and by heated, I mean heated enough to combust, since all materials give off gases when heated, in a process called pyrolysis). Thus, they can be used in HVAC ducts, since they wont spread toxic fumes if they are ignited. Non-Plenum cable DOES give off toxic fumes when heated, as do all household plastic products. Plenum-rated cable is significantly more expensive than non-plenum rated cables, so only use Plenum if you plan on running cables through HVAC ducting.
