3)core

I assumed the core reading is comming from my Turion chip seeing as There is no way for me to see my GPU temps.

If so I was wondering if 77C is a normal core temp for the Turion when playing heavy games. I tried looking at AMD website but find nothing.

Oh, I see... Well, unless you know what the core is reading, it's hard to tell. Didn't you say the cpu was in the mid sixties?

That's the problem with aftermarket fan speed and temp programs. You don't always know where the sensors are. I would assume there's only one censor on the cpu so I have no idea what the "core" is referring to. It's possible the "core" lead is reading the gpu circuit...

Get AMD dashboard demo for the laptops and use that for cpu temps.

For the gpus, I'm using Riva tuner, but it only gives you the temp of one gpu at a time. However, it does make a graph over time so you can see how it's fluctuating also.

Good idea. There's no reason to overclock, and it's always iffy to OC a laptop, so hold off on the OC until the machine is old and it needs it, if it ever does...

At least you know the machine is capable of 11K in 3dMark05, so you don't have to risk your hardware to find out...

regarding as5, yes, you have to call AW. if they allow it, a tech will walk you through the steps.

How hard do you think it will be too upgrade the ram/video card/processor on the M9700?

Yes if I send back the 5750 I might just get a 9700

Or I'll be staying away far far away from alien for a few years. Depending on how my talks go today with them.

Excatly what I think. There is no need to overclock, and even if you do, the gains you get appear to be minimal, so why risk it? The system as it is, is powerful enough anyway. And I agree, the only time i would consider OC'ing it would be when its old and im about to get a new laptop, 3-4 years. But ya, no reason.

RAM is an easy upgrade, just unplug the old stick and in with the new. You just need to be sure you have the right memory. DDR400 pc3200 200 pin dimms. DDR2 won't work in the m9700 until/unless they convert to the X2 Turion.

As for the video cards, they'll be easy as long as there are compatible cards made in the future. The heatsink assembly is complicated though, so in order to keep your warranty intact you may have to allow AW to do the work. The good news is if you're under warranty, all the labor on upgrades is free. All you pay is shipping one way and the hardware "vendor cost" from Alienware, they do the work and run in the system like new, then ship it back on the house.

I need to look around and figure out why you're returning the 5750...

Things are looking nice HH. Glad the rig is doing so well for you. Do you have a copy of the game F.E.A.R. you can load up and see the fps on? I love that game. Kick ass benchmarks too. Can't wait to get my baby.
Minor hold ups on my rig. Yesterday they said I was in phase 4. Today I am in phase 3 and there is a part on backorder. ( as per the norm with me , no e-mail and woulda never known had I not called )I asked what part since yesterday they said all was well and I would begin production today. After a few min on hold the rep told me that the binder was backordered and would be in late tomorrow. I asked what the hell a binder was , and after a few more minutes on hold I was told it was the book that comes with the laptop lol. Too bad they can't begin building the sucker and just put the book with it later. As soon as this laptop comes In I will be taking the very next week off.
Ill need to set it up and game its pants off a bit.
Gratz again on the way things are running on your laptop HH.Looking forward to readin more about what you're up to with it.

That would be great. I love the way FEAR lets you configure your game and posts your FPS in the screen where you test your settings.

Hammer, what are your thoughts on the screen? How is color display and brightness, etc?

I'll get to that soon. Just loaded CSS and BF2 so I'm messing with that.

I did notice with CSS something others have noticed. i ran the stress test in SLI mode and got something like 96 fps. I then shut off SLI and ran it in single card mode and it came in around 115 fps.

I remember reading posts from Dave about SLI and CSS, and he had to change some settings to get SLI to perform better with that game. Can't remember the setting, maybe rendering mode...

Depends on the game. Some games have console commands that will demonstrate the fps on the screen. Some games come with benchmark routines for you to run.

You can get something like fraps. It's a program that gives info like fps and I think you can record clips of the game too. Not sure though, never used it myself.

I usually just play the game. If it's not smooth, then I try to figure out fps and optimization.

So far, everything I've loaded has run very well. Oblivion at 1920 x 1200. CSS at 1920 x 1200.

The screen itself is beautiful. Vibrant and the colors are very vivid. No dead or stuck pixels.

I'm having to get used to the resolution, it's really high so webpage text is very small. I've reset the font size deal so it shows text larger if the page is coded correctly.

I have yet to mess with the settings. It's a little bright but that's easily adjustable. There is a Fn + F8 or F7 to adjust the brightness in steps quickly. That way you can adjust it in game without having to go into menus.

I did take it with me when I drove my wife to a doctor's appointment and tried to use it in the car. It's kind of big to use between myself and the steering wheel while parked, and the glossy screen isn't good outdoors. All the light reflections made it hard to see.

It's a trade off though, it looks spectacular in the right surroundings, it'll just be difficult to use outside. I don't tend to do that though. While sitting on my deck I'll be under trees and in the shade though, so it's not a problem for my intended uses.
