Hammerhead's m9700... - Page 4

Just for comparison purposes, Hammerhead's machine is getting just about the same 3DMark benchmarks that I get with my Aurora 7500 (FX=55 with 2x7800 GTX). And while my desktop is not state-of-the-art, it's plenty powerful. It amazes me that the same performance now fits into such a small (relatively speaking) package as the m9700.

Makes you wonder if we'll even have desktops in 5 years...

Damn HH, you've blown my 3DMark scores truly out of the water!

Must.. resist.. the.. urge.. to.. benchmark.. chase..

I wonder if that's down to the GPUs (yours certainly overclock a lot better than mine - AW hand picking cards, or just my luck, I wonder?) or the 400MHz RAM vs. my 333MHz RAM..

Incidentally - having tried the Arima (84.15), AW (84.74) and all of the TweaksRUs drivers, I can say that the AW drivers easily perform the best and with the least problems (the TweaksRUs drivers break the TV-Out for me, amongst other things depending on version).

Yang - my system certainly coped admirably while I was transcoding a DVD to Xvid at the same time as running Firefox, PuTTY and MSN Messenger.. I stopped short of trying to game or view other AVIs at the same time, though I think it would have coped OK with the latter - gaming probably would have been out of the question though.. but transcoding does tend to hammer the disks as well as the CPU something chronic.

In fact, I think the only slowdowns seemed to be disk oriented, rather than CPU.

However - like HH - I don't have any dual core systems here (just a couple of ageing Athlons, in fact)..

May i ask what the point is of getting an mALX while for hundreds of dollars less you can get an almost equal performing laptop with better screen :P.

nice HH, thanks!

well I figure that I was able to watch a movie n play games on 2 screens w/ my old AW desktop.

(3.4 OCed to 4.3 and my x850xt pe) it score a lil over 8500+ in 3dmark05...and thing just ripped in all the current games @ the time...

so that's the benchmark I'm going by...

Now that I don't game as much anymore, I do more video watching/dvd conversion/music etc.

I just want my cake n eat it too =P

so i'm kinda on the fence, the m9700 has such raw graphics power...but then again the 5750 has the duel core cpu...

oh the agony of making a hard decision...

Sounds like your rig is running pretty cool. Mine gets as high as 78 degrees after playing Oblivion at native res. Guess computers arent build equally after all.

For some odd reason I rather have the 64 bit architecture then Intel's 32/32.

Well beides for the fact that the Core 2 Duo is a 32/64 but still......

Congrats Hammer, you deserve it

Uh oh, the forum code is messing up the pics...

EDIT: Got if fixed. If you refer to anything in this forum with a product name, it tries to link to it and messes up the address. The folder on my ftp site was called m9700 and as you can see NBF auto links to it and changed the address so the pics weren't showing...

Ugh , what format pictures are those?
On my screen all I see are little boxes with a red X in the middle.

Wow I want mine NOW!!!

Is that a wallpaper of the Terminator? Looks sweet

Beee-uuuu-tiful, Hammerhead! Looks pretty sleek. You should be writing the copy for Alienware's advertising...

Even though colors are cool, that saucer silver is pretty darn nice.

Oh yeah I love that screen *drool*

Don't know what to tell you, I don't want to influence you the wrong direction... I haven't done any dvd decoding for a long time. This thing blows my 3.2 p4/6800 Ultra (oc'ed to 3.5) out of the water...

It's clear the biggest feature of the m9700 is gaming, but it isn't really lacking in any department. Like marker01, I've noticed there is a difference between mobile and desktop processors, so it's hard to compare. The only reservation I have about it is the sound, and it's clearly better than any laptop I've ever heard, so I'm not sure how to frame the criticism.

Do you have anything specific you want me to try? If you can give me a specific rip program I can rip a dvd and play CSS at the same time. That might give you a better idea what you're looking at... Again though I have no dual core to compare. My p4 has HyperThreading, but it doesn't multi-task all that well.

The turion is an interesting beast though. It doesn't have a standard fsb so you can get tremendous speeds at times, and it's got an onboard memory controller that in the right situations can really help also...

The thing I do all the time is listen to audio streams while recording, and playing CSS or BF2 at the same time. It slows down my p4 somewhat. I notice the ping to CSS is the same whether I'm streaming/recording or not, but I play much better when not streaming. It's probably partly due to me hearing players in game better, but mostly it speeds up the game. While streaming, a lot of the time I'm dead before I see someone that's shooting at me. Without the stream, I have plenty of time to see the guy before he kills me... lol... Seriously, I play much better without multi-tasking, but it's a hard thing to quantify.

As far as most processor duties, it boots up very fast, and is comparable to my p4 for normal tasks. The jury is still out on multi-tasking.

I wonder if anyone has ever compared Athlons to the p4HT regarding multi tasking. HT isn't dual core but a more even spread between multiple apps. It's possible that anything your p4HT could do, the turion can also, it's just not going to be as fast as dual core...

Yeah, I just googled for "widescreen wallpaper" and the hammerhead shark pic and terminator pic were in the first couple collections I looked through.

Alienware gave me the option to choose one of the colors due to my waiting for the new cards. It was a difficult decision, I like muted conservative looking stuff, understated flashiness if you will, but the cyborg green is their signature color... I would have jumped at all black. I'm thinking about that for myself. Gloss black cover, then the rubberized black grip paint on the wrist wrest to hide fingerprints... Then again after seeing the stock paint, it's so nice I doubt I'll do anything to it.

The silver is actually much nicer than it looks in pics. You can see from the first pic up there, the silver is very textured. Then, it appears to have a heavy clear coat covering it so when light bounces off it you give it a second glance to figure out why that textured paint is so shiny...

My m5500(766) had a flat finish on the lid, and a glossy finish on the interior next to the keyboard. This paint is much nicer IMO. It does take some getting used to on the touchpad and wrist wrest. It's so smooth your skin sticks to it sort of...

It is beautiful for gaming, but it's going to take some getting used to for forums and webpages... I don't like the look scaled down at all. As it's mainly for gaming, I'm still glad I chose the 1920 x 1200 screen, but if it were for work or communications, I'd probably prefer the 1440 x 900 resolution.

How have the temps been? You planning on hitting it up with AS5 any time soon?

I didn't check the temps when playing Oblivion, it did make my desktop gpu hotter than any other game though. Make sure you have the latest update for Oblivion as it's supposed to ease the stress on the vid cards a bit...I edited the previous post due to typo, it reached 78, not 73, but most of the time it's around 70 degrees.
