gentoo install on what ever box can be a god send or pain in the ass what problems are you having?
disk mount's , hardware compat's, or other.
emerge will bring the heat at times but for the most part you should be able to do it.
explain the question - are you trying to test the water before an install or having trouble?
sure help will come

You'd be better off asking on the Gentoo forums: (http://forums.gentoo.org/) The nice thing about the Gentoo forums is that you'll find some of the most advanced Linux users around. You might also want to snag a Gentoo LiveCD to check out how things will look initially

You can download the LiveCD from: http://www.gentoo.org/main/en/where.xml

I don't have the area-51 m5550. I'm just suggesting you post the instructions so that users searching Google can find your post and follow the instructions. Also, where you able to get everything working? Suspend? ACPI? Graphics card? Modem (if it has one)? Wireless/Bluetooth (if it has these)?

well that link i posted is a general installation guide to gentoo, not just on a specific computer. and as far as it seeing all my hardware, yes, it all worked fine. except the wireless, which is an easy fix, i just dont feel like doing it since i am not using it. the only bad part is emerging KDE lol 13 hours
