adding devices to USB hub performance impact?

Thread Starter
I have a USB hub that I can connect 6 2.0 devices into. If I use this hub as a docking station, will there be any performance issues? Basically, I would have my mouse, keyboard, external hard drive, Ipod, PDA, and printer all connecting through the hub. I would then simply connect the hub to my notebook with the single USB plug. I'm particularly concerned about possible problems using the mouse and keyboard in this manner.

Will this work?

Thanks,
Brian

how fast is the hard drive? that is a big power hog. the rest should not be a problem. i've done wireless mouse dongle, 4200RPM hdd, like 15 in 1 media card reader, and my pda. not a problem.

I think such a HUB should have it's own power source.

I have a 4 ports USB 1.1 hub with it's own power brick. It works fine without the power brick, but then I tried to use a game pad and I was forced to use the power brick.

Ive been experimenting with hubs for the last year, since I have six external harddrives and only two USB ports. However, while I have not measured the speed, the time to transfer, say, 10 Gig through the hub is some 20 hrs (est) through the hub and maybe 10 mins without.

The mouse and keyboard should work fine through a hub, since they use less bandwidth. The printer should also work fine, since presumably it doesnt matter that the job takes a bit longer.

Note that you may find a slight delay in your hub connected mouse when you send a big job to the hub printer or move files to your hub connected harddrive. I suppose you will have to live with using the mousepad at those times.
