old "ultraportable" models?

Hello all,
I would appreciate help with advice about older models of ultraportables.
I am need a very light laptop with decent specs. At least able to run windows 2000. I know about the new models, like the Dell X1, or the Vaio models, but these are a little too expensive for me. Ideally I would like to buy a used laptop and get a new battery, etc...Since this laptop will get bashed around alot..(using it for journalism..).

What I am aware of at the moment are the older Toshiba Portege 3440.

Any suggestions/knowledge/experience would be very appreciated,

thanks mucho!

Have you looked at the IBM X series? You can find loads of batteries on eBay, and some used laptops as well. IBMs have a rightful reputation of being extremely reliable and long lasting.

What exactly is your budget?

Umm dont know what is considered expensive here but the vaio S was 999 at Office Depot until 9/9. starting 9/10 the toshiba u205 is 999 also at OD.

Those are nearly ultraportable at 4lbs and seem like good deals for 1K..

ultraportables

thanks for these replies. my budget is upto about $700-800.
I am interested in knowing which of the older ultraportables were really good machines...
Ideally they have USB capability, and enough RAM to run windows 2000. ALso, it would be useful if I could run an external CD-R through them...
any suggestions?
fatwallet: 999 seems too much for me, as this won't be my main laptop but just a good fuctional field-work laptop...

Are there any good websites that have a chronology of laptop models?
zakaluka2: when you talk about the IBM x-series, do you mean the one out today (X60) or older ones? How do I find out what the model names were for older models?

Thanks very much for any help.

Go to the excellent IBM forums at:
http://forum.thinkpads.com/
http://www.notebookforums.com/forum144.html

Also, some older IBM X-series models are the X20, X21, X30, X31, X40 and X41. However, I am not an expert on IBM models and so you should post in one of the two forums I mentioned.

I own two ultraportables right now. From reading your posts it looks like you dont need a integrated optical drive. Both of the ultraportables i have dont have them since i mostly take them to class and take notes on them, and use thumb drives.

Anyways i own a reletivly new Asus S5n (the best by far laptop i have ever owened) You can pick one up NEW still for about $1,300 online, or possibly on ebay for your price range if any are avalible. Its a great laptop, with the 3 cell battery you get about 2.5-3 hours batterylife, and it weights 2.8lbs (my major selling point) and if you get the 9 cell battery i have gotten about 10 hours out of it. Its got a 1.5ghz P-M, 768mb RAM, how ever big HDD you need, etc. And if you get it it comes with its own USB external CD-RW/DVD drive, and lots of extras.

The second ultraportble i own is for work, i got it off of ebay for $200. Its a Compaq N400c (almost the exact same dimensions as my S5n, and same weight). Its got a PIII 700mhz processor, 512mb ram and a 20gig HDD. It also came with a docking port with a floppy drive and CD-RW drive and a crap load of ports. I like it for work because i only use the optcal drive at work, so i just leave the base station there and take the actual computer with me around the office, etc.

I hoped this has helped, good luck!

You need to define "ultraportable".

I just bought a Sony Z505LS off these forums and it works pretty well. It has a 12" screen (1024 by 768), P III 750 with up to 256 MB Ram, external floppy (will never use) and external CD-ROM.

The unit is pretty light at 3.5 lbs.

I have an old IBM X22 that I bought used. I think your best bet is to go with an IBM. They certainly have some of the best build quality. I would look at the IBM X30/32/33. You might even be able to get an X40. Something to make sure is that it has USB2.0. Otherwise, those should have all the features that you need.

I would definately recommend getting a new battery and a new HDD though. You should think about getting the docking station or an external cd-rom drive as well. You won't use it until you have to reinstall an OS and then it will be a major PIA.

take care.

Hi,

I have an old Fusitsu P 2040 ultraportable with 256 Ram, DVD CDR and 2 USB with extra 5 hr battery that I have kept since I havent found someone interested in this great machine. It runs XP ok and Win 2K well. Id sell it to you for 800 dollars plus shipping around the world. That would be another hundred.

If I wasnt so selfish, Id guess though that you could also check it out on ebay for less.

Look on DellOutlet for the Latitude X1.

You can get Dell Latitude X1 from Dell outlet store. They have really great deals sometimes. I got mine 80GB/1024MB/Bluetooth/DVD-ROM/+extended battery for $1180 + mail costs. It is great ultraportable. You can also get a bigger/newer D420, if you need more power.
