Connecting to a printer on a windows network...

Hi

I've got a bit of a problem with my printing. I currently have one printer everyone in my family uses. This printer is connected to a desktop computer and acts as a shared printer. The problem is that the computer that the printer is connected to is using windows. I can detect the windows network and access all the network drives but I can't seem to find the printer. Does anyone know how to go about setting this one up? I'm a little too cheap to buy a print server so that the printer connects directly into the router. Plus a new printer costs about the same price as a print server...

Any help will be appreciated

I'm in exactly the same situation. I've tried and failed to connect to a shared printer (which is accessible to laptops running windows via the network). I haven't really played around with it very much, but I'll be very interested in the responses you get.

It's really easy to get the printer going in ubuntu.

- goto System->Administration->printing
- click on new printer -> network printer
- choose windows printer (smb)
- type in the IP address for the host machine sharing the printer (good idea to set that machine's IP as static. Also, make sure the printer is shared on the windows machine)
- Fill the printer field with the printer's share name
- Populate the username and password with an account on that machine that has access to the printer.
- Hit next and select the proper print driver. Your printer model may not be in there, but other drivers may work. I have an Okidata b6300 and have to use the Raw driver.

That should be it. I have my office setup with samba shared printers and it works pretty well.

YAY! It worked! While I was at it, I set a static ip for the comp. I did a quick search for my canon i560 drivers. I got something that works pretty good for b/w text. Back to typing my AP Chem labs...
